I have been working on losing weight for a long time and have come a long ways... I want to pack on more muscle but also want to lose the fat around my belly.... People at the gym have told me if I want to increase the muscle, tone down the running... Is this true. This is my routine that I go by, and would like to know if I should cut some of the running out.

Monday - Chest/shoulders/back
Tuesday - Run hour
Wednesday - Legs
Thursday - Run hour
Friday - Triceps/biceps
Saturday - run hour
Sunday - Rest

I also do Martial arts for 2.5 hours, on my days I run.
Any suggestions would help. Oh and from a long ways I mean from 430lbs to 248lbs in 4 years.....

430??? Dude, that's serious weight!!

Yep, its amazing I was that big, I look back at some of the old pics and some of the old pants I wore and I think...."Dang... thats alot of cotton...you could make two or three pants out of that" I will never get like that again.

Wow congratulations! Lossing weight is hard enough I can't even imagine losing that much weight. As far as the running yes doing to much of any endurance exercise is supposed to interfere with muscle gain to an extent. Because your asking your muscles to adapt to in two ways at once and one is bound to be compromised. You may try running less but faster. Like run for a half hour but increaseing your pace.

running for a full hour is a lot, at least cut it down to around 30 minutes.

Or do some sprints:

It will take u less time plus I assure u when u are done with the sprint you???ll feel like if u had been running for 2 hours.

Try something like this:
*100 yards 2 times full
*80 yards 4 times full speed
*50 yards 6 times, u dripping in sweat by now if u giving it a 100% effort
*10 yard 120%, give it all u got left. 10 times, concentrate on your take of by the 2nd step u want to be at full speed.

I see u practice martial arts this will get those legs going.

;)

I read this artical somewhere that sprinting can help you put on muscle. Does anyone think that has any truth?

I do believe so. When u sprint u using short outburst of energy, unlike distance running.

If you want to put on some muscle, I'd cut your cardio back a little, use your diet to reduce the little bit of fat you have left.

Congrats on your amazing weight loss!! thats awsome. :thumb:

running wont help to gain you any muscle, I have seen craploads of articles saying that it will but unless the person in the tests has some kind of abnormal endocrine system then no.
