My parents haven't been very supportive of me wanting to lift and are insisting that i get a physical first by a doctor. I have been lifting for a month anyway and dont see any point, i'm a young healthy guy, haven't had a physical in a while. Do you guys think i should talk to the doctor before starting a heavy lifting routine?

how old are you?

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a physical before starting an exercise program.

age 20, there paranoid because i had a hernia last year, but i didnt get it from lifting. Also, they think lifting will raise my blood pressure and that I can seriously hurt myself, but im careful to only lift weights i can handle, and have a spotter for any benching.

There isnt really a reason to see a doctor, but if it makes your parents aprove quick go see the doctor so you can pump some iron!

Yearly check-ups are a good thing. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'd just do it to keep them happy... anything for a peaceful life, plus, the doctor will most likely be on your side, so to speak with regards to your training and it might rub off on your parents. Never hurts to get a clean bill of health either. :thumb:

I think parents need to stop babying their children. The baby boomers almost didnt have parents and the new generation of children have parents who suffocate their children with over protection. How many of you now 45+ year olds lived in your mom and dads home when you were 21-25 years old? Now a days its the norm almost. I feel like each year more and more restrictions are placed on the youth.

I have a 19 year old nephew who lives with me and I have a feeling he will move out when he's in his 30's. :(

I don't go to Doctor's about this sort of thing because most will say when you're injured, "Take X amount of time off." Fuck that. Smart or not, I'm not going to listen to them, so no point in wasting the money to be there.

that is why you go to a specialist. ;)

Its because today's youth are highly censored from the real world. Mothers are waiting 30 years to cut the umbilcal cord now a days dont ya know. I really think parents are trying to mold their kids to specifically now a days.

you are 20? your parents must not trust you at all, what did you do?

Everybody could stop freaking out at the poor guy. If parents didn't put enough restraints on their kids, then everyone would be complaining about how they're 'hoodlums' and whatnot. I do realize that your comments aren't directed towards him, but still, either way no one's happy.
