Someone mentioned that they made benches with a built in spotter of sorts. Now, if this is true it'd be freaking amazing. I work out at home and don't bench for safety reasons; 200pounds balanced precariously over my neck with no safeguard isn't my idea of a good time.

If the benches are real can someone please link to where I can order online? The local sporting stores do not carry such things.

if I were you I'd get a power rack and an adjustable bench.

That's the best you can get for a home gym set up.

Hm. A powerrack might work but they take up a ton of room and aren't cheap. :(

I'm probobly just being thick, but what are stands?

adjustable stands you put next to your bench to spot you.

Ooooh. Fancy shmancy. That's exactly what I need. Thank you very much. :D

get this in muscle and fitness mag they were advertising benches where when ur fingertips lost contact with the bar the were cable or somethign that instantly suspend the bar, not that it would be cheap but i just thought that was damn cool and worth mentioning

I don't know about the cable thing, some people use a smith machine, but that is too rigid for me. The power rack is good, but I want the bar to hit my chest, not some pins just above my chest.
What I do is leave the collars off, then if I get stuck I can dump one side, then the next will automatically dump, a whole lot of freakin' noise involved and possible injury, but at least you won't be dead.
Now this method works for me, I've never had to dump, and I've even maxed out this way, but I am really in tuned to my limits, and have been training almost every set to failure for so long that I have a pretty good feel for my limits.
I don't recommend this until you know your limits, and it's not fool proof, if you waste too much energy trying to get it up after being stuck you may not have enough energy left to dump one side. But if you realize right away (and you should) that it ain't goin' then why wait DUMP.
Once again, DO NOT use this method unless you have at least a year or two under your belt.
But NEVER leave those freakin' colloars on if your by yourself, there's no way out if the collars are on.

Nick,

If your location is correct and you live in Riverside California, you should be surrounded by fitness stores on every corner :). Just look in your yellow pages under Fitness and find a popular fitness store in your area. Any popular fitness equipment store would be more than familiar with the self spotting benches. I am from California and every large fitness store I've visited had em. Now I am talking about good gym quality fitness equipment stores...Not like Kmart, Target, Best Buy and places like that. In any case If I was you I would want to physically look at some before commiting to purchasing one by mail order. Well that is just me anyway. At least first check your area. I can't believe they don't have any in Riverside California.

Hey now, don't start dissing best buy. That's the best store that's ever been created. It's like heaven in there. ;)

Yeah, I suppose derek for many things, but they wouldn't be my first choice for weight equipment  :funny:

I would chose Kmart for that
But only the quality stuff :hehe:

Yeah I heard K-Mart just got in a new supply of those cool cement weights.:p

What's funny is I hit like half a dozen of those type of stores to get some weight gloves....even big 5 and Sport Mart, and none seem to have x-large gloves :funny: they just have small, med and large... Hell I had to order a special pair just to get one that fits

I just got a really nice pair of L. gloves from Wal-Mart believe it or not. They come in handy (so to speak) for low rows.

I don't use the gloves all the time though (just for low rows which kill my hands)
What's the purpose of liftin' if you don't have calluses to pick when you're bored.

I pick my nose myself
<just kiddin>

No, that would be shop lifting

well I was just curious our best buy's here in cow town are all electronics. I guess they do sell appliances which if you carried your washer around you could build yourself up pretty well.......
