after i do side bends i get a cramp in my back on the upper right side is their a reason?

40lbs and i have a journal on here if you wanna see my workout too.

Since this exercise is more of a trimming, than building one. If you use to much weight you will thicken your sides, and increase your waist size.

40 Lb is not much weight, but for some things it is. I personally do not use any, other than body weight. I don't want a bigger waist, I just want the trim.

Try cutting back on the weight some see, if this helps. This is one of those exercises that does not need much (if any) weight.

trimming exercise?

There is no such thing as a trimming exercise. You can't spot reduce, if that's what you mean. If you are talking about "toning" the muscle, then that is also a function of bodyfat.

I think adding mass and strengthening your obliques is a good idea. Some people think it will make their waist "bulky" or something like that. Your waist isn't going to grow crazily beyong the size of your upper body or anything like that. However, it will make your oblique lines more visible by initiating some level of hypertrophy.

Yep, helps you get that good V shape. Not trimming as in fat reduction. Maybe call it a toning exercise?.

Besides I like my 44 - 34 shoulder to waist balance. Don't want to mess that up. I really do these things as a warmup only.

Are you sure you aren't hunching forward, or otherwise compromising form, when doing these? Is there any way you could video tape yourself and watch for this?

In that case, all exercise is a trimming exercise. They cause you to burn calories, which in turn may cause you to burn some subcutaneous fat. However, you can't tone or trim in a specific spot.

No there is no exercise, that will make 900 pounds of fat look good. But there are exercises that will help to shape the body. This happens to be one. Or at least over the last 50 years - it's has been so.

nothing shapes you. you are the shape you are. if you naturally have a thick waist doing side bends wont shape it or sculpt it or make it smaller. that is your body structure. you make no sense.

OK - well say you are right, I don't play these little arguement games!!!.

there is nothing to argue about. All of your statments are based on opinion or anecdotal evidence. Your bodies structure is your bodies structure. You can't change that. There is nothing to argue about. :thumb:

Indeed. My waist will never be really small. I have a bone structure that doesn't allow my waist to go below about 34 inches even when I'm in the single digit bodyfat range. However, that doesn't stop me from doing weighted core work and adding mass to my rectus and obliques. You won't see my rounding my back during heavy lower body work. Conversely, even with my less than optimal bone structure and "big" core muscles the ladies still seem to like my physique.

i just have one arm with a dumbell in it an the other by my head and bend to the side ...i don't bend at the waist i bend up above my waist

I'm pretty sure you should be bending at the waist, unless I've had this misconception for a long time...

That was kind of my point. Despite the fact that I naturally cannot have a really small waist, and I train my core with heavyweights, I'm still pretty skinny. So, train your core like you would train any other body part.
