I have heard that alcohol and weight lifting don't mix, and that most serious body builders don't drink. I tend to drink on the weekends, not weekdays, but I drink quite a bit on the weekends (never during lifting sessions, or for at least several hours after one) . Is it true alcohol causes the body to produce estrogen? Is there a supplement I can take to avoid the negative side effects, or at least minimize them?

well, the obvious answer is dont drink alcohol in large amounts :P

im cutting down a lot, not that i drink a fantastic amount anyway, but still. just gotta weight up whats more important.

im not sure about the estrogen thing...but a lot of middle aged men who have been drinking all their lives DO seem to have breasts...

Consuming to much alcohol causes restricted blood flow to your muscle tissue as well as sedating the glands of your endocrine system.

Yes those are just two of theside effects Alchol will also slow muscle growth and recovery growth to a crawl. It will destroy your metabollisim ruin your diet, prmote the stoage of fat poision and kill brain cells and lower the production of natural homones in the body. It can also leave you severly dehdrated for up to 48 hours afterwards which if you are on Creatine is just going to destroy your cycle.
Alchol in large doses should not be on a serious bodybuilders list for the above and other reasons.

getting drunk every weekend is not going to fuck up your Workout that much lol

----Its not going to destroy your metabollisim

Chemically Correct: Alcohol Part I - Par Deus

Part II

Health issues aside, it should be clear that the regular consumption of significant quantities of alcohol is absolutely detrimental to one's efforts to improve body composition. However, we all know its consumption is woven into the very fabric of our society, so most of us are not going to do away with it completely. We will have to be content with merely minimizing the negative consequences of its consumption. Other than the numerous specific recommendations that appear in the body of this article, the main general thing you can do is limit total consumption.

Read the two-part article; it's certainly worth it - especially if you drink, or argue about what is and isn't detrimental.

You're not necessarily escaping the negative effects of alcohol merely by limiting your consumption to the weekend. That's a ridiculous argument, especially if weekend drinking is taken to excess.

Which isn't to say that the opposing argument - as is typically presented - is any less absurd.

I should add that, personally, alcohol in any reasonable quantity severely screws me up both physically and mentally. The point? With any drug, you can't merely go by what others experience when it comes to assessing your reaction and the potential consequences.

Science tells you what happens and why; it does not produce a custom printout of the report.

What Og can get away with has fuck all to do with me; it has jack shit to do with you as well - use science and personal accounts wisely.

Alcohol isn't a supplement. Is it? :hmmm:

Well, I can definately tell you that the guys in the gym who tell me stories of how fucked up they got last weekend are the same ones that havn't changed in size for the past 2 or 3 years that I have seen them lifting. I stopped drinking in January and have gained insane amounts of size and strength since.

Right on mate!! Regular Alchol consumption may be fine for the avarge joe but for bodybuilders it can be very harmfull towards our goals. I can safely say I'am in the exact same boat as you:thumb:

haha i should put this in my sig

From what I understand, alchol slows test production and GH processes. So you'd be weaker and have a less attractive body composition

But I have freinds that are in 10x better shape than me, and they drink like fish. It's a sick sad cruel world

Moderation in all things! 4 the serious bb, drinking is'nt worth a flying f. How the hell efficient do u think u'r liver will be at synthesizing protein while it's trying to detox booze? Don't get me wroung, I drunk my and u'r share of it and maintained a reasonablely
excellent physique, but when I stopped drinking I got great gains. If u'r serious about u'r
BB, leave the booze alone.

Thanks to all. Seems like I'm gonna have to give alcohol up for a while to see if the gains increase, and if so, drop alcohol altogether. If now, back on the bottle I go. I'm Irish, so this will be tough..."If you cut me, do I not bleed Bud?"
Still, has no one heard of any supplements that may combat the side effects of drinking? If not, we need to invent one, which will probably make us rich......
I will miss you alcohol....

The worst side effect of alcohol is waking up next to a woman that is less than desirable.
