Being a college student, i am often up very late most nights whether it is because of school work, studying for a test, socializing, meetings/events and so forth.

My first meal is typically scheduled for 9:30am which means i try my best to go to bed around 11:00pm. However, it's very tough to be consistent and i am often going to bed around 2-3am instead. Because of this, i usually debate between two options.

a) Get at least 8-9 hours of sleep but skip the first meal. My second meal is at 12:00pm so i would only be getting 5 meals in me but i hate missing breakfast

OR

b) Get 4-5 hours of sleep and eat my first meal and go about doing the usual everyday routine

More often than not, i do option A but sometimes i do option B but i would think that sleep is more important than just missing one full meal.

Note: I am not obsessive or paranoid over this ... i am just curious what is more beneficial since i have been doing this for a while and it is hard to be 100% consistent day in and day out

I wouldn't do either. I would sacrifice time for sleep and go to bed ealier. Just what I would do.

Personally I'd stay in bed til 11am, skipping first meal and just have a huge breakfast/ lunch to make up. Sleep is more important to me.

Yeah, I'd say sleep would be more imporant in this situation.

If he dose'nt have classes to attend, and/or studies later, then it makes the most sense. I could never study straight after getting up anyway, and 90% of the time did'nt bother with the first class (9am) anyway. But that's just me.

I always opt for sleeping late. It's so much better.

4-5 hours of sleep and my body feels tired and sore the whole day.
Whereas missing that one meal isn't even noticeable.

5 meals is plenty. Just make sure when you stay up till 2-3am, you eat something right before you hit the hay. Problem solved. What I do anyways...

Sleep owns all. Even your diet.

I think sleep is as important if not more important than your diet.

Sleep is very important, however why not just have a casein protein shake ready hop up drink it and pass back out? I fall asleep easy so thats what I would do.

Of course i know that, but what i'm saying is that sometimes i have no choice when things come up and i have to get them done no matter what. It doesnt happen every night, just occassionally.

Thanks for the replies guys, i figured sleep would be more important. However, i always eat a small meal right before bed such as tuna and cottage cheese.

Good idea about the protein shake Double D, i never thought about that

Ideally you would want to have a consistent sleep schedule, but being a college student that becomes almost impossible. If you are up later you are probably eating later meals as well. So just sleep in! In the long run over a week, calories shouldn't change assuming what I said is happening?

True, i am eating later meals than the average person does. My weight is still steadily increasing (192 pounds) so i guess i shouldn't worry too much.

I do remember in college I would mix a shake right before bed. I would leave it i the fridge and my ice box was at the end of my bed so I would wake up drink it and knock back out. God how good did I have it?!?!?!

Choosing the sleep over the meal is best. Because you will be only getting 5 meals per day in, then I would suggest adding an additional 10g of protein to eat meal.

I don't get how having breakfast cuts your sleep time in half (by 4-5 hours!). Please tell me it doesn't take you that long to make and eat breakfast. And how in the world do you get 8-9 hours of sleep in college?!

I get 9 in a regular basis. Often 10.

Well, normally i go to bed around 11pm and wake up at 7pm but it takes me about 30 mins to an hour to get out of bed and change and shit then i have to walk about 10-20 mins to the diner to eat breakfast which is around 9-9:930.

When i am up late, i go to bed at 2-3am so that means i get 4-5 hours of sleep because 7am is my wakeup call.

This only happens once or twice a week on my non-training days. It's easier to get up on training days because 1) i look forward to my workout and 2) i force myself to wakeup because i know i can't miss my workout and i workout after my 1st meal so it's important i eat. On my off days, it's a little more tempting to sleep in and skip breakfast.

Just beat off at 11, you will be cashed out in 8 minutes.

Sleep always trumps, Add more food to each meal.

I don't have a meal schedule anymore like that. What i do is, wake up and eat meal 1, 3-4 hours later i'll eat my second meal and so on and so forth until i get to bed. Point is that way my meals are basically proportional to my activities during the day.

My schedule with work is completely screwed right now, some days i have very early days (like 8am) others i don't have anything to do till about 6pm but finish work at like 12-1am so its impossible for me to keep a strict schedule. To not drive myself crazy i just eat my breakfast whenever i wake up then eat 3-4 hours till the end of the day. Typically i have cottage cheese right before bed.

This way, if you stay up later you'll still fit your meals because although you're breakfast is at 11 instead of 9, you're last meal can be at 1 or 2am instead of 10 or 11pm.

You should just sleep then because all the food in the world isn't going to do you any good if you don't allow your body down time to take care of it's self...

There is one other way.....

Hang one of these babies above your bed, fill it with liquidised steak. Voila! Get up nourished when you want.
