I was in Holland and Barrett the other day and they had this stuff, Soy Mince. It looked like....granola-ish. It was hard and crunchy. Is it supposed to be some sort of vegetarian meat substitute, and if so, is it good?

Sounds like TVP to me (textured vegetable protein)... You have to re-hydrate it with boiling water and it takes on the consistency of mince... but it has no flavour - so you need to add stuff to it (unless you like the taste of wet cardboard! :D ).

It is good as a protein substitute - being a complete protein - but not as good as your things such as eggs... Also, you have to check the quality (different brands have different sodium/macro ratios).

I see. Definitely going to stick with real meat...

It did look a good bit like pieces of cardboard!

Its similar to Quorn mince I thought...didnt really taste that good and was chewy.

Cant beat good old fashioned meat......

Unless U have a moral issue with meat, eat it..........

Mind you I worked at a butcher shop for about 5 years.... dont trust them, trust your eyes...

Sometimes in the lean mince we put week old topside and rump etc. Basically whatever didnt sell out of the front... Then cut up a fresh round or two and then it looks fresh as hell

Yeah....similar story whilst working on well known supermarket butchery counter during my weekends while I was at Uni......I was vegeterian then too throwing lumps of dead cow around.....I saw some bad meat get sold as good

I still saw the light and started to eat meat though...couldn't stand all that veggie crap food....but I do wonder how good my meat is now :hmmm:
