im 16, 5'6" and i keep getting yelled at not to do squats because of stunting my growth.......should i really stop? how about other leg machines leg press etc

Whoever is telling you that squats will stunt your growth is a fool. You can tell them I said it too. Squats, done properly are the best or one of the best overall (leg especially) exercises you can do.

As long as your using proper form, and have a spotter handy, doing Squats are probably the most important exercise you can do, other than deadlifts for total body mass/strength.

The only thing that will possibly stunt your growth at 16 are Anabolics, which you should refrain from using completely.

What Camaro said. Who ever told you that is an idiot. Squats are absolutely one of the best movements you can do, and in no way will stunt your growth. Sheesh.

Hey Camaro, congrats on being a mod!

I think that flashing avitar gave Prince a seizure... Then he accidently hit the mod button for Camaro. :hehe:

Congrats man!

i heard if you do it wrong and do maximal force or w/e
you can hurt your growth plates

HAHA... yea, well the avtar is the only Spurs related one that I could fit in man! I had a really cool David Robinson one but it was too big :(

Thanks for the props guys, I love the board and glad I can be of service.

And CAT.. you do ANY exercise wrong and you can mess up a number of things in your body, growth plates probably included. :)

Dude.. Premier, you are the MAN.

Don't squats actually stimulate the release of growth hormone?

I know if you do enough sets, it stimulates the release of breakfeast!

That's absolutely correct. As a matter of fact, ANY lifting will stimulate the release of HGH, it's just that the bigger lifts; squats, deadlifts, rowing, bench press will cause your body to release MORE. The more muscle tissue that gets worked the more HGH will get released, that's why the bigger lifts work the best.

The myth of squats causing damage to growth plates, knees, lower back, etc. was started by people who are too damn lazy to do squats. Yes squats, when done correctly and done to maximum effort, SUCK!!! They are just about the hardest lift to accomplish because they put so much stress on your entire body. But you know what? That's exactly why they're just about the best exercise you can possibly do to get HUGE. :thumb:

P.S. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) isn't picky, it saturates your entire body. Believe it or not, just doing squats will cause your entire body to grow. No, you can't do squats exclusively and forget about all the other body parts but you WILL get bigger by doing squats.
