We would have so much more clean power, in the form of nuclear energy, if a bunch of dumb-ass, tree hugging, no-thinking, yuppies didn't force their stupid idea that nuclear energy is bad.

Where exactly are we going to build all of these Nuclear Power Plants? Do you want one next to your house? I mean it's going to take hundreds more on top of the 100 or so already in commission to take the place of dirty fueled power. Also where do we dump the used product? What level of intelligence are the millions of new workers in these facilities going to have where to we find them? How fast can we get these things built to make sure they are absolutely fool-proof? I would rather use the large nuclear reactor trillions of miles away than have hundreds of them sprinkled across America, building up tons of radioactive waste we can't get rid of.....

But like Obama said we new to promote innovative ideas in the energy field, hell maybe next week some kid will figure out how to harness anti-matter in quantities enough to solve our problems for the next million years.....

have u looked at a map there have been sights mapped out sense the late 80's if we built these in 20 years we would be 85% energy independent.that scare some people because then there global warm gigwould be over if we went in the direction.....as of now solar wind then clean energys could not be used on a large scale it unsound.

I live in the middle of a city, but yes, I'd be okay with one on the outskirts. Also, we have plenty, yes plenty, of open land to build on; especially in the south-west. You know, where the desert is.

I mean it's going to take hundreds more on top of the 100 or so already in commission to take the place of dirty fueled power.

Right then...so we should bother to build wind-mills or large solar power plants because you have to build more than one?

Also where do we dump the used product

This shows that you know jack shit about life-cycle (and reuse of) the different (as in, more than one) fuels for nuclear power plants.

I'll also take this moment to point out something interesting about dumb-shits and nuclear technology. You bemoan that we're going to fall behind in solar technology if were don't use it. Well, the same thing has happened with nuclear power tech. A bunch of idiots got it into their heads that anything with the word "nuclear" in it is evil. For example, MRI was originally called nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, but they had to drop the word "nuclear" because is scared too many morons. Technology for nuclear power plants is way behind where is should be for the aforementioned reason; the same thing your accusing Americans of doing to solar power.

However, even with the stunted nuclear technology, we can produce waste that is very clean and safe. If we create modern nuclear power plants.

But like Obama said we new to promote innovative ideas in the energy field, hell maybe next week some kid will figure out how to harness anti-matter in quantities enough to solve our problems for the next million years.....

Like most eco-nuts, you've wondered into fantasy land.

great...any suggestions for storing the mass amounts of nuclear waste

I like how you use mass amounts when you really have no concept of what that means.

Yucca mountain would be just fine if the politicians would just shut the hell up

agree 100%

It's amazing how few people know anything true about nuclear technology. It's also funny how many people hear the word "nuclear" and their minds shut off.

I worked at a place where the microwave died. A coworker, just messing around, put a hand-written sign on it that read "Do not use. It's broken and will leak nuclear radiation." Almost no one would go near it and took thought the sign was legit.

Really man, people's minds just shut off.

The biggest problem i have with nuclear energy are the current cooling systems they have in place. Here on the east coast they build the cooling towers on rivers sucking in water at a rate of millions of gallons an hour along with tons of all kinds of biomass (fish fry, crustaceans...) along with it.
One of the local plants I've worked at the steam coming off the tower is so corrosive it has to be treated or it will eat up anything in it path.
There have been new technological advances in closed system cooling towers from the stuff I've been reading in the news but the costs to implement them are very high.

I am not against Nuclear Power, I just don't think it's something we can rush into using and there is probably only a handful of experts who know how to oversee the building of a station to make it Chernobyl Proof. It will have to be a mix of many different solutions Solar, Wind, Hydro, Nuclear, Ocean Current, etc. Besides I like to have a little diversity in power solutions, especially when you're replacing a mined or drilled solution with another mined solution it makes sense to have alternatives still yet. A Uranium rod only lasts a few years and then it's useless, unless you're a terrorist. How much Uranium do we have who has the largest stash, and when do we get to the point that we are fighting over it all over again? I did read once about Fast Breeder Reactors, they make more energy and produce radioactive waste with a half life of only 40 years, still you face the problem of a rare material to keep these things running....

Every country has plenty of Silica to make solar panels, not everyone has an abundant supply of Uranium is all I worry about....Do we really want to have to deal with OUEC like we have with OPEC?

You do know that the incident at Chernobyl had nothing to do with technology, right? It had everything to do with idiocy. The Russians wanted to stress test the plant. The problem was that there were many, many automatic safeguards in place. So to be able to run a stress test, they shut off all of the safeties; and *boom*, it went to shit. From the Wiki article: "An emergency would not have occurred if the regulations [15] were followed."

I'm also not against other technologies. But we could do so much more by using nuclear tech.

Incorrect. The rods can be reused in different types of reactors. Plus, there are other (some say, better) types of radioactive fuels than uranium. We have enough fuel to last thousands of years. You really need to read up on this.

On a related note: anything that would devalue the OPEC would also make me very, very happy. I'd love nothing more than to see the Arab countries (and Venezuela) lose their source of income and be destitute.

Are any of us really qualified to be talking about our opinion on nuclear power?

All I know is what I've occasionally read in newspapers.

Not saying this applies to others here, but where does one get info on nuclear energy?

I presume, google.

As far as my concerns, I've attend public meetings where documented data from public funded studies are presented and have copies of these documents.
So no that doesn't qualify me as an expert on nuclear power just an informed person on the environmental effects of cooling towers associated with nuclear power plants.

I'm qualified. I work for the Department of Energy on the Nevada Test Site. (Where Yucca Mt. is.;) )

#1 Locations for nuclear power plants have been scouted and approved for a couple of decades. They could already be in operation if they hadn't been held up in the courts by frivolous lawsuits.

#2 The technology for recyling nuclear waste has also been around for decades. We invented it. Unfortunately, our own government under the Carter administration made it illegal for us to use our own technology. Right now it's being used VERY effectively by France who gets 75% of all their power from nuclear energy. To give you an idea, this technology takes approximately a train car full of high level waste and reduces it to a soup can full of low level waste.

For a good insight into France's program, read this: Nuclear Power in France | French Nuclear Energy

Why don't you and your facts just get the hell out of here?!

You're talking about nuclear energy without using fear mongering. That means you have an evil agenda! And that you hate the environment!

Monster!

Joking aside, it's amazing how few Americans know this. It's quite frustrating actually. Can you imagine what the country would be like if (at least) each state had it's own reactor? I believe that right now we only have 24 in operation.

What's even more frustrating is how few people know that coal-burning plants put off radiation.

For those that don't know: Coal Ash Is More Radioactive than Nuclear Waste: Scientific American

Arizona perfect example no acid rain or 3 headed kids palo verde nuke been in bizz for 20 years.. nuke tec has come a long ways the french ( which i dislike have 90% of there power from nuke and they build them all over the world.. just food for thought..

I grew up next to a nuclear plant and would feel very comfortable raising a family next to one.

all of these fears of yours sound terrible. craft jobs created building the plants, high level professionals needed to run them. (more job creation) absolutely fool proof? (you mean like driving a car). Radioactive waste isn't a concern of mine the only concern I have with getting rid of the waste is how long is it going to take before the government lets us get rid of the waste? washington is what causes the problem thousands of miles away

Travel through AK or TN you'll see three head babys. it isn't from nuke power:roflmao:

That explains everything. Are you the guy they send out there to clean up the post-test mess? :D

He does look a little like the Toxic Avenger sans the mop.

you can't hug with nuclear arms...lol
