With all the political talk going on why not bring up issue's other than the war in Iraq.What's your take on these two things,why?They will play apart in the election of 08.Be serious.

The same way the conservatives brought up lame shit like flag burning. It's filler issues to get people's minds off of Iraq. Voters saw the flag burning bill, started to think patriotically, and were swayed back over into their political stance.


Both sides are guilty, that was jsut the ebst example I could remember. Having said that, both parties have many proponents to stem cell research, and it SHOULD be a major issue. As far as gay marraige, I dont really care.

All attempts at passing these embryonic stem cell research bill's have failed.Now with the democratic party controlling the House and Senate will Congress vote to pass these bills regardless of Bush's veto ability.And if a democratic candidate wins the presidential election in 08 then nothing stands in the way of these bills.Hilary would pass thim in a minute.I personally think it's just a matter of time regardless of my thoughts on the issue positive or negative.Within 3 years max there will be massive animal testing and no turning back.

I am pro stem cell research and I am pro gay marriage. Stem cells might help a lot of people one day, and using stem cells is not playing god anymore than curing the flu. If the religious nutjobs think one sort of science is morally wrong, then they should abstain from the process, but to deny people who do not even share the same beliefs from the possible benefits of the research is ignorant and closed minded.

As far as gay marriage goes, just leave the poor bastards alone and let them have the same rights as everyone else. They work, they pay taxes, the contribute to our economy and way of life. Let them have the ability to ruin their life by marriage if they choose.

I don't recall anything in the Constitution that says people who are heterosexuals have privileges not available to homosexuals. The bible may have something to say on the subject (I don't know - never read the thing), but there's a little thing called separation of church and state. In other words, if you can't remain impartial in the argument with respect to religion, you have no business arguing. Sure, the country was founded on Christian values, but the founders did not intend for it to continue to be influenced by it so heavily. Obviously I think we should just leave them alone. There's no reason not to let them marry.

Stem cell research could definitely help a lot of people some day. Questions of ethics should be left up to qualified professionals who are trained to evaluate the ethics of such procedures, IMO. In other words, unless there's something drastically out of place, it's probably best to trust the ethicists' opinions on most matters. When it comes to deciding for yourself whether you want to use that kind of research to your advantage in the future, it's your choice - it'll affect you only how much you want it to.

I used to have a good informed opinion on stem cells but then I forget everything I read about them.

As far as gay marriage...what Kelju said. It's so ridiculous, either let them marry or make some other sort of instution that is the exact same thing as marriage and let them do that. Or did they already do that? damn it I am out of the loop.

While Democrats bask in newfound control of the House and dream of veto power in the Senate, patients and a determined breed of scientists celebrate their victory for stem-cell research.

In this election more than any other, candidates treated their stance on embryonic stem cell research as a political weapon. The race for the Missouri Senate seat all but centered on the issue, with Democrat Claire McCaskill, an outspoken supporter of stem-cell research, narrowly defeating her staunchly anti-stem cell opponent, Republican Jim Talent. Historically, most Democrats and moderate Republicans have argued for embryonic stem-cell research, while most conservatives have opposed it, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a nonprofit nonpartisan organization designed to promote the field of science and science news.

Missouri also passed Amendment Two, the legislation that champions stem-cell research, and which Michael J. Fox famously endorsed in a campaign ad that put his battle with Parkinson???s disease on display. The promise of stem-cell research is most directly linked to Parkinson???s and Alzheimer???s diseases, spinal cord injuries, strokes, burns, heart disease, diabetes and both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Robert Lanza, medical director at Advanced Cell Technology, a small biotech company in Worcester, Mass., like many stem-cell scientists, has spent the last few years growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of political support for his field. ???We [have been] essentially moving with one hand tied behind our back and without the necessary tools and funding,??? says Lanza. ???And without funding, there is no research. It???s that simple.???

Lanza points to the U.S. as one of the largest and most creative biomedical communities in the world, ???But we???ve stifled that community. This field of research could arguably be on par with antibiotics and vaccines . . . and [instead] it???s a joke.???

Lanza???s post-election Wednesday morning was considerably more optimistic. The Democratic victories prompted the scientist to talk about ???new life and new hope.???

Douglas Kerr, professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and who has used stem-cell therapies to help paralyzed mice walk again, is confident the new Congress will move fast toward jump-starting a new round of embryonic stem-cell research.

???I think that within the first three months, we will see new bills brought forth to expand funding,??? says Kerr. ???Of course, President Bush will ultimately veto the bills and Congress will have to vote to override the veto. But if they do override it, we will be able start our animal trials within the first several months.??? Those animal trials are currently held up due to a lack of financial support, says Kerr.

In the hierarchy of science, animal trials are the standard precursors to human trials. With stem-cell research stalled at the starting gate, many patients are also growing angry and frustrated, says Sean Tipton, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research, a patient-advocacy group that supports stem-cell research. ???Unfortunately every day the Bush administration???s restrictions are in place is a day longer that patients are going to have to wait for answers.???

Tipton cautioned that the political process takes time. ???I don???t think that the day the policy changes is the day that stem-cell therapies will be available in the pharmacy,??? he says. ???The government doesn???t always move very quickly.???

Neither does science, reminds Lanza. ???We still have basic research to do,??? he says. ???But there are patients out there who don???t have a lot of time to waste.

That is exactly the opposite of how it played out last time. The Dems threw out the pro-choice/stem-cell/gay rights issues and the Repubs used that as a rally cry to bring out the neocon religious freaks from their dark corners and vote away the remote chance of same sex unions in many states or stem cell research from new stem cell lines at the federal level.

As far as Stem Cells and in fact all scientific research in America, we are quickly losing ground to all of the other countries who aren't being cock blocked by the Church, I mean this isn't fucking Galileo vs The Pope times anymore, we know that science is a noble pursuit in our attempt to come in touch with our creator by breaking the puzzles of life he has laid out before us, I mean the Human Genome Project has found that we only had a 5% change from chimps to us, well thats controversial to the creation theory so any research in this field would be shut down by the church, then would come one of the most important fields of discovery Proteomics the study of protein structures and functions which i think will prove more important in curing diseases and enhancing life than any other field in this century....... so you let the church invade our rights for one field of research and eventually they'll start attacking all the way down the row....

Putting the fairly tail most people call the bible aside...(since you can't scientifically prove 99.99% of it)...how does me having an 11+ year relationship with my partner affect you personally...other countries have ok'd gay marriage and they have not fallen apart...people are taught how to think as a child and you really have to re-train yourself to see the world as it is and not how you were taught...trust me... I have been there and now that I have learned how to think for myself...I see the world in a different light...

I think the solution to the Gay Marriage issue
is to make all forms of marriage illegal...

IE.. No city, state, or federal government or court
should pass legislation which binds two persons contractually...

It should be done legally, by contract, privately through an attorney
two people sign a contract, that a court cannot endorse

And the marriage should only be recognized by the overseeing
religious faction, it is their ceremony after all...
