has anyone had experience of using a tens machine (i have a disc bulge, had pain for about 5 months and figured this might help the muscles relax) and having pain similar to DOMS in the days after?! i used it first time on sat and although it definitely helped with the pain at the time, now i have a pain extremely similar to DOMS in those muscles?

i used one once back in 2001 to relieve tense muscles in my back it was like a good massage but i dont know if it woulld do anything for a bulged disc. i would let a professional look at it. better safe than sorry.

sorry i should have clarified better, the tens machine will do nothing for the actual bulged disc, i was using it for the associated muscle spasms i was getting. since using it though i feel like i have a severe case of DOMS in those muscles, just wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience or an explanation for it?

Are you talking the machine that puts electrical stimulus on your back muscles? They do work, but only in coordination with PT or chiropractic care.

yeah thats the machine, i'm not questioning if they work or not more as to why I appear to have DOMS in those muscles now, my theory is that for the last few months those muscles have been stuck in a sort of spasm, the tens machine has made them "work" by sending the impulses making the muscles contract and relax, because my muscles arent used to that stimulus i have in effect DOMS just like if you havent done weight lifting for a while and your muscles are not used to the new stimulus you get much more severe DOMS than when you are regularly lifting?

Generally, I avoid DOMS by drinking tons of water. Everyone is different. If you have a spasm in a muscle for no reason, you need more water, move more, stretch or possibly have an electrolyte imbalance.

It can be used to modulate pain, but is unlikely to improve the condition per se.
