Your belief that people should have no ambition to become better and have no incentive to do so should not hinder another individual that has drive and ambition to be a success in whatever form they see success as.

My success and drive are towards what I can provide my family year after year. What kinds of food I can provide them. What vacations I can take them on. The cars we drive. The house they live under. The neighborhood we live in. Sorry, with your ideology, I should feel content to live in the hood and give up most possessions to whomever needs it more. Go practice what you preach for a change. That goes for any other person that thought his rhetoric the golden gospel - I bet not one of you wants to give up your time, money and possessions for the 'greater good', you just want someone else to foot the bill.

To belittle people for striving to be more, or have more, isn't the right attitude to take. If I didn't strive for more, I'd still be poor and struggling. Instead, I'm firmly in the middle class.

There is nothing wrong with people want to make more of themselves. I spend time every day putting effort into my spiritual, mental, and physical health. I also spend time every day working on my relationships. I also work almost every day on acquiring more money. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I have to ask again: where is the line? Why constitutes being in the rat race? You're saying that I'm running it, but you've so far failed to define what "it" is.

You're making it sound as though doing anthing other than hanging out, sleeping, and eating is being in the rat race.

Take my parents for example, they make good money and I've never wanted for anything. However they both work 60+ hour weeks, are stressed to hell and claim 'they don't have the energy to exercise/eat good food' everyday. Now by your standards, they have been 'successful', but at the end of the day they are still pawns in the big game and I don't envy their lifestyle one bit. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely greatful for everything they've done for me, but I do not want to follow in their footsteps.

I agree with what you wrote. Your parents do sound like their in the race. I've tried my hardest to provide for my family without getting caught up in it.

The funny thing is that even working 60+ hours Monday through Friday, they could still get out of the race. They just need to find balance. Which for them probably means they should ditch television and focus on something productive.

Not that I think farming is an unworthy task, it's just not something I'd like to do for a day job.

On a related note, I'm going to be doing a ton of yard work this year. I'm planting bamboo around the entire fence of my backyard and planting an medicinal garden.

It's not that hard to get into the business. Just put a decent website, with some SEO optimization, and you've got a start.

You just need to land one job, do it well, and get some feedback. Then you put that feedback on your site as a testimony, and it starts to move forward. That one job will help you get another and do it well, which adds another testimony, and so on.

Yeah, I hear you about working in an office. I still work onsite for a client a couple days a week. But I also work at home. The commute is walking down the stairs. I get to come and go pretty much as I please (concalls notwithstanding).

As for your age, it actually works for you in the IT world. Plus, you can wear a suit.

My current plans have me leaving the IT field altogether in 12-18 months though.
