"Human beings by nature want happiness and do not want suffering. With that
feeling everyone tries to achieve happiness and tries to get rid of suffering, and everyone has the basic right to do this. In this way, all here are the same, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, Easterner or Westerner, believer or non-believer, and within believers whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and so on. Basically, from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same."--" dali lama

If everyone realized this we would all be better off. As an athiest, I find the tenets of buddism more condusive towards a world with less religous strife and less dogmatism towards each other( close behind it Bahais, QUakers and Unitarians), perhaps he can spread around buddistic philosophies that will temper the exclusionary "us vs. not us" in the abrahamic religions. We athiests know most of mankind's psyche is too weak to give up god altogether so this would be a good logical step in decreasing one of the major reasons for conflict ( behind scarcity of resources etc.)

Damn you're about to get :owned:

First off, his title was bestowed upon him at the ripe young age of 4.
How he was chosen is an awesome store, research it on your own.

2nd, commend him for doing something he should be doing?
Who the fuck are you? What have you done for humanity, surely not DEDICATE your entire life to the cause of reducing human suffering.

While most people are selfish egotistical nimrods, this guy's out there doing everything in his power to help others.

He doesn't own anything besides his clothes and his title.

The concept of the Dalai lama?

Simple. He's an exemplary model of how a buddhist (or anyone for that matter) should act and behave in regards to how they treat the world and it's inhabitants.

Watch some of his videos. He's incredibly genuine.

Your problem: You're taking the reverence of others to this man, as blind dogma towards a "name" or "title". As if he were godlike.
And I can see why that would piss someone off, who knows nothing about him.
The thing is though..he deserves it. He may be just human, but he's a damn good one. Selfless and loving.

I could go on, but you should really check out videos about him.
There's very few people in the world I respect, but he's certainly one of them.

See, here's the thing.

I'm not talking about the Dalai Lama or Lhamo Dondrub as a person. By all accounts, he seems like an incredibly caring individual who does a lot of good for this world.

That's great, I commend him for that.

However, I don't care to research how he was brought into the role because, by definition, the role is fucking bullshit.

Please, it's not even plausible to compare him to me. Maybe if I was chosen at age four to be the voice of an entire religion, I'd be doing more than he was. It's impossible to say either way.

Again, I love your enthusiasm for the topic because obviously, I'm enthused. However, at least debate with me on what/who I'm telling to go fuck themselves.

I have noticed a lot of anger and hate from you lately, what's going on?

I've made a lot of realizations since graduating from college.

One of which is the fact that nice guys truly do finish last.

Having said that, I think the "hate" you see is completely justified. Calling a spade a spade, or Lady Gaga a cunt, is just kind of my thing.

He's pissed cuz his dad was diagnosed with cancer, remember?

My Dad had another surgery on Tuesday, the night of the Bruins/Canadiens game seven. Swear to god, kid you not, after having been knocked out for four hours, and having been incapable of walking on his own, the first rational thought that came to his brain/out of his mouth was "I need a TV, I can't miss this game."

The nurse who talked to me on the phone was laughing uncontrollably with me saying in her entire career, she's never seen somebody act that way immediately after surgery.

Only my fucking Dad. He won't die from cancer because it doesn't fit into his life... he simply has to know how the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots are doing.

Having said that, I don't think his cancer is contributing to my hatred of late. Though it has made me realize some things about how I want to live my life, knowing that in an instant, you could be dead...

um, dude... this thread has soxmuscle has a sandy vagina written all over it. :coffee:

No sand.

I may come off like that given the over-the-top thread title but I won't be losing sleep tonight over my hatred for the concept of the Dalai Lama.

Well said.

The reason the human race will never be able to live like that is because we are selfish by nature.

Put you and I on a deserted island, and no matter how much I love you, I will eat your face and testicles to stay alive, as you would do to me.

You underestimate the power of time, the evolution of ideas and our true potential. With time on our side, anything is possible.

a lot of people can love enough so they would die before they harmed the person they were stranded with. maybe you underestimate the ability of others to love because your capacity to is small. maybe you hate what you cannot attain.

I don't believe there is anything I can't attain if I put my mind to it.

My capacity to love isn't small, by any stretch of the imagination.

It's human nature. You would eat your emo daughter if it came to your survival.

i would let my own daughter eat my flesh to have her survive,

It's hard to believe that anyone who's studied all the complexities of the human body for so long would still believe that it's all the result of atoms randomly colliding in space and coming together to form something so complex and efficient by chance. Not that I believe anything that's in any man made religious book, but I don't see how anyone could believe that there isn't something behind it all greater than ourselves. Until human beings are able to explain everything around them, it seems pretty ignorant and arrogant to believe we're the most advanced beings in the universe.

it's not arrogance, we just don't believe in a supernatural god that cares about us . He crushes a chilld and lets him die a slow death in an earthquake but spares a geriatric pedophile his life. He is not worth worshipping. My patients who pray to him daily get shitted on but I curse him and have a great life .How do we know our god is not a mad scientist and earth is his petri dish?

Only the religious seem to claim to know god. We athiests don't pretend to at all. We are more humble. In fact, how do we know there is only one god? quantum physics says there are multiple realities, perhaps the hindus and greeeks are right? makes sense that multiple asshole gods are duking it out , because the abrahamic god is pretty dogmatic, has a politcal agenda ( wether it sides with israelites or muslim nationhood), and gets his feelings hurt so much he has to destroy nations. What a pathetic diety.

This god is pretty wasteful creating billions of planets without life and only us? He is a pretty shitty creator. what doe she do with all those lifeless galaxies? play pool? You need to study statistics and quantum physics , the statistical probability that an radiation particle can escape strong nuclear forces is very highly improbable but happens all the time. The chances that life can began spontaneously is say 1/700billion, but guess what, there are bilions of lifeless planets so we are still within the statistical probability.

93% of all members of the academy of science are athiests. We are all friggin idiots.

The argument that things are too complex so there has to be a god died with quantum physics, non linear dynamics, complexity theory etc.

Selfless human nature.

I think our true nature is like a blank sheet of paper. It is neither good nor bad. If we choose to be selfish then we will have more enemies and less friends. If we choose to less selfish then we will have more friends and less enemies. So I think we have to choose which one is more benificial for us and others.:)

Man, I really thought you had a brain in your head.

Obviously, this is an exaggeration. The only person you wouldn't try to kill is your own child. Every other person... brother, friend... you'd kill and eat because that is how we work.

I thought from initially reading this thread and first post, sox morphed into Realist - or realist did a body snatch.

I do agree with your dad on the Patriots - I follow them every year. Too bad those cocksucker Jets beat them the last time. I wanted those Jets to go down in flames just for the coaches BS, let alone some of the players BS moves.

Oh, this was about the Dalai Lama... Sorry, I got nothing.

No, I must eat brains to live.

I was referring to the position. Not the current person in the role.

Ok, well I don't really have much to comment on in regards to the position. I know very little of previous Dalai Lamas other than vague historical facts. I never gave a shit about the current one until I became extremely interested in the study of the brain, and the Dalai Lama kept coming up during scientific discussions. That interest spun off a tangent where I started learning about Tenzin Gyatso. The more I read, the more impressed I became.

Much like myCATpowerlifts, I love and respect the Dalai Lama. You should watch some of hsi interviews and read some of is talks on suffering and joy. Very powerful stuff.

Will do. I trust your opinion.

The belief that somebody is of more importance than you to the point of worship, whether that be The Royal Wedding, or the Dalai Lama isn't something I can fathom.

The title was exaggerated, as from reading the little I've read from when he came to my College to speak, he seemed like a great individual.

So we finish the eighteenth and the (Dalai Lama)'s gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

That's because you have no spiritual growth.

Didn't The Dali Lama attempt here recently to abdicate his throne? I can't remember how I heard it went down but something like he wasn't allowed to by someone or something something dark side

Lul...

To answer your question, he was simply saying that he's getting up in age now, and that someone will need to step up to the plate before too many more years.
