Ya, stick with the basics, and consume more calories that you burn a day.

Remember, doing more is not better, so don't get caught up in doing 16 sets week in and week out for your arms.

Rest is when you grow, not while working out.
 
Take your bodyweight and multiply by 10. Comes close to your daily amount of calories needed to maintain your bodyweight. Now add 500 calories a day spread over 5-7 meals. Try to do the 40/40/20 (Protein/carbs/fat) ratio. Train heavy and no more than 4 times a week. You should put on 2-4 pounds a month if you are a beginner/intermediate. Creatine helps alot. 10 grams a day. Obviously do basic exercises i.e. squats, deads, cleans,benches and dips.
 
Lift heavy, eat well, rest. Then repeat.

every week you should aim at being able to add on more weight to your weights...so i am told.
