Anybody else dreading the influx of newbies after the first of the year at the gym? I know it sounds a bit selfish, but I hate this time of year coming up from a training standpoint. The gym always gets crazy busy for a month or two, and then settles down. I find it hard not to dread working around all the people who don't have a clue what they are doing. Last year I trained super early to avoid the masses. just wondering if anyone else shares my frustration.

I cant wait to have more people in my gym. It will be fun waiting even longer for weights and machines. I prob go real early also.

New Year's resolutors fling to the gym like flies on shit. Someone else at IM said that, and I wish I could remember who.

I'm lucky enough to have most gym stuff at home but i still occasionally use the local gym for a few things and yes January's drive me crazy and i know this is going to sound bad but its the bunches on 17/18 year old boys looking for the "bicep physique" that annoy me the most.still i shouldn't grumble too much as they only last a few weeks and when they do train its only either chest, arms or abs.
it is entertaining watching them do stupid things like 1 rep max on the bench from cold and bicep and triceps only sessions which include swinging a ez bar about with a pendulum effect for a bit i suppose.

Teenagers are the worst.

I know man, it is funny a bit thou because you see them coming after new year and you know they not gonna last.

Considering i work in a gym, usually doing reception/membership sales, nothing fills me with more dread than the new year. Still, the trainers probably have it worse than me. 80% of the programs they'll write will be for people who will never follow them.

Those kiddos just come in the gym to do bench and curls! When I get up from flat bench and one of them steals my spot, it makes me want to break their little legs.

i hit the gym at 5am. there are very few people there at that hr. no matter what time of year it is.

another cool thing about going really early is it's almost all chicks. i like that. . .

ugh I hear you... I hate this time. I've actually been dreading this since about oct lol knowing its looming around the corner

I work out in a University gym, so I get this pleasure twice a year. The first week of January and the second week of September when the freshman come in. All though I really can't complain about the 22 year old hard bodies coming in.(womens) All they do is cardio and and they really spruce up the sceneary.

Yeah I hate all the influx of posers coming in. Should take them out back and put them out of their misery...

thats why you really want to belong to the old school hard core gym, not the fancy lifetime, club fitness, or 24 hour fitness gyms.

all the loosers that are fat and stay fat and out of shape all year, when asked today, when they're getting in shape, its, jan 1st.. already a negative answer.
what not tonight?? why even get out of shape??
anyway, you find these loosers in these 3 gyms..

the very hard core gyms get 1 or 2 new members jan 1st, and its a stud thats been training 20 years in his garage or basement..

only about 1 of these gyms left in each city.. sad..

Yeah, unfortunately the hardcore gyms can't target a huge market of "normal" people like commercial gyms. The result of this is that hardcore gyms take on more of a niche role and commercial gyms become more fad-crazy every day. Remember when kettlebells were the biggest commercial fad? The gym I'm at has a bunch of kettlebells that sit on the floor all day. I think I may be one of the only people that even picks them up during the week.

Unfortunately real training dictates that you dedicate yourself not only to working hard in the gym, but to commuting to your gym and paying to belong to a hardcore gym.

Try finding an oly gym in your area that isn't a 30+ minute commute or extremely expensive - it's nearly impossible. Powerlifting gyms are a bit more common but still - you're going to pay if you want to train there.

I'm looking for O lifting gyms that are close to where I live in Atlanta. If I can't find one, I'll just train in the early morning for some raw powerlifting comps for awhile. Still, it's annoying that you have to give up your training because of a lack of availability.

Interestingly enough, when I was in Europe sports like weightlifting and powerlifting were much more common and much more popular.

It is bad for the dedicated members of the gym but great financially for the gym as well as the fitness industry as a whole. All those douche bags buying up memberships, supplements, equipment ect... help far more than they hurt. So have patience they'll be gone soon enough.

At least you know the squat rack / deadlift will be availabe. My dad (former gear junky in the 80s) taught me to never skip a leg workout. It amazes me that young guys don't do legs. Why is this. I feel the best after a nasty leg workout that made me almost vomit. Like I accomplished something more than just a workout. Old school is the best school in my opinion.

another thing i hate about the january newbee's in the gym is the ones that stick around for a few weeks and then feel the need to walk around with the "umbrella pose" where they walk around with there hands 10" outwards from from there hips to make them look bigger or maybe like some sort of gangsta maybe,or even worse when they bring there mates that just come to watch and get in the way.
still like mentioned we all love to see new women in the gym :)

Teenagers are the worst.

I would put teenagers the second. what kills me are these middle-aged waayyy over weight housewives that come in and think that walking slowly in a pair of these bullshit shape-up sneakers on the track with pink 1lbs in their hands is gonna burn off the supersized fast food meal they just ate because there is just no way in today's world that anyone can cook, i mean u need to get in atleast 4 hours of tv a day. then u got a freakin trainer putting them on a bullshit 3xmillion rep program because thats great for burning fat and god forbit they actually break a sweat (you dont wanna over train now!) Then youll here that same trainer telling moby dick that its natural to put on 15 pounds in the first month of exercise because youre gaining muscle, leaving out the fact that their diet is crap and walking in circles 3 times a week in their mind just gave them a reason to bump their diet up from supersized to a extra burger and a shake (for the protein ofcourse).

i just puked a lil bit in my mouth... had to swallow it though since i dont waste good food

the good thing about teenagers is that theyre alot of the time more acceptable to "molding" and can be tought. lets face it alot of us started out on a bicep/ab/bicep program lol.

I know, I use a university gym. Not looking forward to when the spring semester starts. I also hate fighting those future dropouts for parking spots the first few weeks of the semester.

I really miss my old hardcore gym. We joined a bigger gym a few years ago. My wife likes working out there, and she enjoys some of the classes.
Oh well.

I think you convinced me.

I can deal with the 1-2 month influx... it's only a month or two.
What drives me f'n crazy!!! take roid rage and put that on roids... is the old fat guys that I always see at the gym that are there regularly but never lose weight b/c all they do is work there upperbody.
They walk around w/ those little god damn chicken legs that are so gross and overly small compared to there FAT massive upper bodies.

Theres this one fire fighter that acts like hot shit whos works out at the gym- thinks he's old school bad ass or something w/ this stupid fucking flat top walking around benching 245 like its so bad ass. I hope it slips out of his hand and splits his stupid fuckn head open one day.

He's been working out for years and he's a total fat ass with scrawny legs. Never seen him do a leg work out once.

and yes the chubby moms who walk on the treadmills with one pound weights in the pink victorias secret sweat suits are prob number two.

I hear where your coming from..I encourage all to join and workout because its good for them. What really kills me tho is when a newbee comes in and thinks they know everything! You give them advise so they wont hurt themselves, turn around and throw more weight on the stack!!lol o well few weeks and they are gone.
