Do you drop the weight? At my school we got those rubber bouncing plates for oly lifts and our couch tell us to drop the weight so we don't hurt our backs putting them down.

Your coach is right. I don't have bumper plates so I don't drop the weight.

This is correct. There really is no "negative" to a power clean (other then from above-head press to shoulders if you wanted to). Bringing the bar to the ground won't do anything for you other then put you at risk for injury and burn energy. By all means, drop the fucker :thumb:

I wish I could, but I'd probably get thrown out of the gym. I miss those bumper plates.
 
hell yes you drop the weight. not only to avoid injury but also to preserve as much energy possible for the clean motion. once you get to heavier weights you'll see that lowering the bar without dropping it is almost as taxing as the clean itself.
