After doing a rather heavy set of bent rows, I overheard a converation with a "verteran cop," and "kid-ectomorph." The cop was explaining how doing a reverse grip on the bench press gave your tricepts the " horseshoe look, " and how it hit the outside of your chest, and gives you the "full look." He went on to elaberate upon how doing hammer curls hits "this part of your bicept" (the outisde) and how you can isolate every muscle in your body by simply reversing your grip on the exersize. I didn't say anything. I wasn't trying to argue with a cop--I was told that was a bad thing.

Discuss.

hey doesn't know what the fuck he is talkin about and Iwould ask him to support these ridiculous claims with some science

He was a cop so it must have been true....cops know stuff. :)

I've heard of doing reverse grip bench press, all i think it does is hit the chest a little different and hits the tris too, but it doenst isolate anything and all it will get you is injuries or pain

Closer-than-normal grip?

No no. You have to be very careful with this excercise, it would be easy to drop the weight if you go to heavy because the grip is awkward, and your wrists are also in a odd position if you go too wide or too narrow. For me there are too many other options for chest/tri's to bother with this risky excercise....thats just me.

It emphasizes the tri's and shoulders more over the chest. Not a lot of chest being worked with that exercise. I've tried it and didn't like the grip at all, but I guess it's fine for some people.

I hate cops.

I'm applying for the force after summer :p

it makes the exercise more sagital since radius is placed in a position which keeps your elbow from flaring outward. You will then be using more tricep for the exercise.

it is a plane of motion. sagital, frontal, transverse. three planes that movement takes place in.

pass on what? the planes of motion?

Ha that was funny. Back to the topic. The football players in my highschool use to swear by reverse grip BP. They were taught this by their weight trainer couch who was this old power lifter guy. I remember spotting them doing this. Heavy weight too. I do it every now and again on a Smith Machain just to be safe. It really does hit your triceps good.

Wow, where can I get one of them weight trainer couches? Then I could sit on my ass all day and still get a good workout :thumb:

Anthony Clark was a reverse grip bencher, after constant shoulder problems. I believe he topped out at 820 reverse. I got up to 90% of my regular flat bench this way, with a wide grip. I stopped doing them some time ago and prefer a regular old close grip bench.
