Too Many Carbs?

If you've read my other thread on "slow bulk" you'll understand what my objective is -- lean mass, while minimizing fat gain.

Now I just looked at my March macros and I'm noticing that carbs look like they took off this month. I beefed up the calories from what I think was under maintenance in Feb (2,782) up to 3,200 in March.

Here are the average daily macros:

* Calories: 3,200
* Protien: 240g
* Carbs: 223g
* Fats: 135g

The biggest change from Feb to March is carbs -- from an average of 165 to 223 per day. (Protien jumped significantly from 193g to 240g...for me at 208 lbs, I'm thinking that's a good thing).

The question I have is, is this too much in carbs?

I know I have to provide fuel, but I don't want to intake too much so there's risk of fat storage. I'm thinking that at minimum maybe I keep most of my carb intake to the morning (pre workout) and just after workout and then maybe lighten up after lunch.

Based form your photos, you look like a pretty solid dude, Summer is comming so if i were you, i would probably try to cut and lean out because if you eliminate about 5-10 pounds of fat form you (should be easy) you will look WAY bigger due to vascularity and defenition than you will ever look by bulking and gainin 5 pounds of muscle....but never the less......Your diet seems fine (i dont know how tall you are)...If you're bulking then up your protein intake to about 300 ( i dont know your LBM) this means that you will probably up your cals to about 3600 cals and if you keep them all clean you should not have a problem wiht it.......During a bulk, with lots of heavy lifting, your carbs are just fine where they are

By no means is that too many carbs for you. I would try that amount and and evaluate your progress in 4-6 weeks and adjust accordingly.

I've always been curious what the right % breakdown is for this goal across protien, carbs, and fat. Right now, I'm at 30 /28 / 38. Sounds to me like my percentages are fine and I don't need to futs around any and it's more about feeding the right amount of calories to feed my routine.

I hear you on the lean out, but I feel like I'm just now giving my body a chance to grow after years of idiocy when it comes to diet. So to I'd like to "slow bulk" and minimize fat gain by gradually increasing my calories. For example, I was at 3,200 for March and now I'm upping that to 3,400-3,500 this first week in April. If I can see some gains with this approach that would be great. Then again, if I see that fat is creeping into the picture I'd reduce the intake a little.

I want to succeed on this slow bulk thing before I even think about cutting.

Summer is coming though. I figure I could at least do this for another month or two and then try and trim come May and June (since around here in the NE, beach weather seems to wait until after July 4th). If I were to continue to lift heavy and then drop my calories down to say 2,800 I'd think I could maintain muscle and look a tad tighter...just in time. Maybe that's not realistic.

Anyways, my body seems like it's on a decent roll for once. Want to ride this and think about cut later.

You got it - it's not the percentages and it's not the carbs - it's just the calories.

Your protein and fat are sufficient; under ordinary dieting paradigms, the rest just comes down to maintaining the right calorie level, and your comfort.
 
Hey, I'm no expert, but why don't you just bulk asap, and when you cut, that fat you have will go sharpish! the more you have, the faster it dissapears
 
Why is that one should always cut in summer? Why is it season specific?

(I know it's hot all the time where you live - "cut in summer, bulk in winter" is a cold-weather custom)
 
It's always hot here, winter & monsoon are good but they don't last that long. Year after year the summer is getting hotter & hotter. Like one of the taxi driver said Hot Hotter Hottest!!!

Is it ok to bulk in summer? People here hardly go to beach ect and we indians don't need that much of tanning really.

So bulk or cut?
