I got what is more than likely a cracked rib fom a mountain bike wipeout. The pain is moderate but not extreme, should I quit lifting for a few weeks to allow it to heal or will it heal anyway? Has anyone ever been through this? Also if I do quit for a few weeks what would be the best way to minimize muscle loss?

Have you been to a doctor to actually see what the problem is?

Not yet but I am positive it is a cracked rib, if it does get worse I will see a doctor.

You are a dumbass, go see a doctor.

No, def not a cracked rib. If you've ever had one you'd know. You wouldn't be moving right now, and that's a fact. You'd be in bed for the next 3-4 weeks in pain. Maybe a bruised rib, but not cracked cause you wouldn't be able to breathe without being in severe pain.

That is right.

I had bruised my sternum a while ago lifting weights and I had pain for 3 weeks. Very bad pain at sometimes. A cracked rib would have been even worse. If you had a cracked rib you would feel it whenever you breathed deep, coughed, or even worse, sneezed.

I would see a doctor though and get checked out, you want to make sure your organs weren't damaged.

Yeah, you have to be very careful about stuff like this. My grandfather has had 3 broken ribs in his life and he's told me it was the worst pain he's ever had. Twice from bulls ( he worked on my great grandfathers ranch for 30 years ) and once from being shot with a 12 guage shotgun.

I dont see the point since all they will do is give me a pain prescription and tell me to take it easy for a few weeks, theres nothing else they can do.If I felt sick or the pain was unbearable I would go.

There is no brusing in the area, the pain gets bad when I brath in and hurts like a mofo when I sneeze and if I push in on the area where it hurts. Its possible its not a crack but I would bet it was, just leaning over makes it hurt worse. If it were a clean break I know the pain would be unbearable but I suspect it is just a small crack, but as I said if it gets any worse I will see a doctor to be safe but I know from other people I know who hade bad breaks other than tapeing the area and giving pain pills there is nothing else they can really do.

Well what advice do you expect to get from an Internet forum that a doctor can't give you?

Unless the doctor is a fitness expert I expect some sound advice assuming anyone else on this forum weight training has had a cracked rib!

The best way to minimize muscle loss is to eat well and do any lifting that your doctor clears you to do. Increase protein intake so that you never enter negative nitrogen balance and your body won't have to resort to catabolizing your muscle tissue in order to obtain the amino acids necessary for daily function.

Sorry, if I came off the wrong way, but people come on here all the time and say stuff like, "MY ARM JUST FELL OFF, IF I DUCT TAPE IT BACK ON CAN I STILL BENCH PRESS?!" I also highly recommend consulting with a doctor. If you don't have health insurance I understand, but it would be prudent to do so if you're covered.
