Under Active Thyriod

My friend has recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.She has been given a course of hormone tablets to help her.She has been told these pills could have some side effects including making her look bloated due to water retention.Is there any diet, exercise routine or supplements which could help her from suffering from water retention? Any advice would be much appreciated.Thx.
