I was wondering how water is absorbed by the body, specifically: how fast, and how much can it handle at a time.

Say I drink a gallon of water. I'm assuming that is too much for my body to handle at much, and the body gets rid of the excess water. I'm trying to find the right amount to drink without overdoing it.

Is it better to drink water with food, or by itself?

well depending on the temp. the body either has to warm it up or cool it down to absorb it. I think w/ or w/ out food doesn't make a difference. And having more is def. better than having less.

There is virtually no way to measure water consumption by the human body. It is used in countless chemical reactions all throughout the body. It is pretty hard to overdo it with water. However, it is much better to be intaking a little "too much" as opposed to not enough.

I stick to about a gallon throughout the day, but more if I feel the need. During the 80% humidity summer on the DC/Metro area I often down 2 gallons of water and only pee once or twice the entire day.
