About 4-6 inches off the floor danny, really work your negs bro. Do them on a decline bench too
 
Try a rope around the neck again with the weight attached. Works for me.
 
I use dumbbells danny, easy for me then plates

core muscles are just like any other.. so you train them like any other muscle group. A few sets (3-4) of 10-20 reps because of their makeup with weights and you'll have a good solid set of abs..

not to mention when your core gets stronger... so does the rest of ya! The easier it is for your body to support and work with heavy weigth obviously the stronger you get.
