Should a younger kid start lifting? My nephew just moved in with me and has been asking to go to the gym.

He will be 14 in Dec and weights 90ish lbs. Thanks
 
I was 15. No reason a kid can't begin lifting at an early age. I wouldn't recommend going for maxes with singles or even in the 3-5 range, but 3 sets of 10 would be no problem at all.
 
Of course! Just don't push the kid too hard. Let him start slow, and ease his way up through the next few years. It will give him a great advantage. :)
 
slow easy and proper breathing and proper form are very important..he has to learn the good technique from the beginning.

Started power lifting at 13, my school had a team that competed and won national competitions. I'm 6-4 now.

I started lifting at 13. Sometimes hard, I still grew to 6'1, more than 3 inches taller than my dad.
 
it is better to avoid heavy weights and concentrate on proper technique and form at 14. Some champions start early and are not affected and some are affected...some have professional bone deformation and some don't ....it is hard to tell
medically speaking it won't stunt growth if done properly, however heavy weights can lead to poor form and can hurt growth plates of the bones which will affect growth...

I'm thinking of 3 days a weeks with full body workouts. I won't have him going heavy at all until form is perfect and he is older.
 
Very light weights from 10 to 15. 15 started heavy. I am almost 6'5".
 
make child lift at 12, start the gears at 12 1/2. Proceed with heavy gear cycle at 13, continue administering vigerous workout regime with extreme anabolic use - Found this in the 1965 Russian Olympic powerlifting manual (say with russian accent, sounds better)
 
I have three boys 16,14,11. All of them are diffent 16yo is 6' 200lbs benches 315, 14 yo is 5"5 146 , 11yo 4'10 110. They all develope diffently. My oldest son likes drop sets and compound movements, middle like isolated movements, m youngest high reps perfect form. They feeed off each other. Just being in the gym keeps them away from all the others traps in life
 
I started at 13...just make sure he learns proper form before trying to add weight
 
i have a 15 yr old..6'1 240lbs...squats 550..deads 475..bench is a little behind at 265..
 
You can ask your nephew to go for gym but tell them to lift only very light weights. If we lift heavy weights at this age, it may cause back and other muscle problems!!
 
Take him with you. The younger they start the better. I would rather my kids or cousin whatever come to me and ask to go to the gym rather than play games all day.
 
Better than doing drugs at an early age. Get him dedicated to the gym not drugs. Worked for me. No affect on growth either
