An understanding of Type leads us to appreciate that what we and others come to regard as our greatest failings are the inevitable cost of our greatest strengths. I hope I can help you guys out with this:

The Four Dimensions of
Type Theory

Extraversion vs. Introversion
Where do you get your energy?

Extraverts' energy is directed primarily outward, towards people and things outside of themselves. Introverts' energy is primarily directed inward, towards their own thoughts, perceptions and reactions. Therefore, Extraverts tend to be more naturally active, expressive, social and interested in many things, whereas Introverts tend to be more reserved, private, cautious and interested in fewer interactions, but with greater depth and focus.

Extraverts generally prefer spending time actively involved with the people and things around them. Generally they will prefer to celebrate with ???the whole crowd.???

Those with an E preference tend to:

??? have high energy.
??? think out loud.
??? ???put their foot in their mouth???
??? work with TV or radio on.
??? easily engage in conversations.
??? have many ???close friends.???
??? thrive on working with others.
??? readily talk with strangers at parties.
??? don???t mind interruptions & phone calls.
??? prefer talking over listening.
??? need affirmation from others.
??? be easily distracted.

Introverts generally prefer spending time thoughtfully involved with concepts and ideas. Generally they will want to celebrate with ???just a few close friends.???

Those with an I preference tend to:
??? have quiet energy.
??? think before they act.
??? pause to collect thoughts during talk.
??? ???tune out??? background noise.
??? resent ???repetitive chattering??? of others.
??? have a few, special friends.
??? have been pushed to ???be more social.???
??? are reserved and hard to get to know.
??? rehearse or think before speaking.
??? are perceived as great listeners.
??? ???recharge??? alone after socializing.
??? have good concentration.

Sensing vs. iNtuition
What is your source of information?

Sensors notice the facts, details and realities of the world around them whereas Intuitives are more interested in connections and relationships between facts as well as the meaning or possibilities of the information. Sensors tend to be practical and literal people, who trust past experience and often have good common sense. Intuitives tend to be imaginative, theoretical people who trust their hunches and pride themselves on their creativity.

Sensors tend to see the world in terms of the immediate, real, practical facts of experience and life. They will therefore tend to make sense of things by focusing on the facts first.

Those with an S preference tend to:
??? be realistic and admire practicality.
??? believe ???if it ain???t broke, don???t fix it.???
??? ???do??? rather than ???think??? about it.
??? like specific answers to questions.
??? like jobs with tangible results.
??? concentrate on the immediate task.
??? prefer working with facts and details.
??? insist on, and give, clear instructions.
??? prefer teaching facts, not concepts.
??? complete tasks step by step.
??? search for the best way.
??? use words literally.

iNtutives tend to see the world in terms of the possibilities and meaning of each situation. They will therefore tend to focus on the big picture to get an overall impression of any situation.

Those with an N preference tend to:

??? be imaginative and admire creativity.
??? believe ???if it ain???t broke, break it.???
??? think and do several things at once.
??? prefer to imagine all the possibilities.
??? avoid mundane tasks.
??? find future more exciting than present.
??? like ???big picture??? over ???boring details.???
??? need to understand before they act.
??? prefer teaching concepts, not facts.
??? start where they are inspired.
??? search for meaning and relatedness.
??? like word games and double meanings.

Thinking vs. Feeling
On what basis do you make decisions?

Thinkers make decisions based primarily on objective and impersonal criteria -- what makes the most sense and what is logical. Feelers make decisions based primarily on their personal values and how they feel about the choices. So, Thinkers tend to be cool, analytical, and are convinced by logical reasoning. Feelers tend to be sensitive, empathetic, and are compelled by extenuating circumstances and a constant search for harmony.

Thinkers generally make decisions based on an objective and nonpersonal analysis of the evidence. Accordingly, they will usually go with that which ???seems logical.???

Those with a T preference tend to:
??? stay cool when others are upset.
??? like proving a point.
??? objective; may seem cool and uncaring.
??? decide on fairness rather than feelings.
??? motivated to achieve fairness.
??? firm-minded, over gentle-hearted.
??? make the difficult decisions.
??? trust logic and principles.
??? be precise in their use of words.
??? are honest and direct.
??? are cool and reserved.
??? are objective
??? are naturally critical.
??? are motivated by achievement.

Feelers generally make decisions based on a subjective judgment in which they consider the effect it may have on others. Accordingly, they will usually go with what ???feels right.???

Those with an F preference tend to:

??? put themselves into the other???s shoes.
??? prefer to accommodate others.
??? are warm and friendly.
??? decide on feelings rather than fairness.
??? motivated to achieve harmony.
??? want to apply mercy.
??? be good at understanding people.
??? trust feelings and values.
??? prefer harmony over clarity.
??? easily affirm others.
??? are sensitive and diplomatic.
??? take things very personally.
??? are naturally affirming
??? are motivated by appreciation.

Judgment vs. Perception
How do you prefer to live your life?

Judgers prefer a structured, ordered and fairly predictable environment, where they can make decisions and have things settled. Perceivers prefer to experience as much of the world as possible, so they like to keep their options open and are most comfortable adapting. So Judgers tend to be organized and productive while Perceivers tend to be flexible, curious and nonconforming.

Judgers tend to prefer living life in a decisive, planned, and orderly way, aiming to regulate and control events. Thus, they tend to keep to a schedule and organize their daily activities with lists.

Those with a J preference tend to:

??? have a specific place for everything.
??? have a schedule for the day.
??? be more serious and formal.
??? not like surprises or changes in plans.
??? work steadily through the task.
??? keep and use lists.
??? thrive on a planned & orderly lifestyle.
??? feel best finishing things.
??? be happiest after decisions are made.
??? meet deadlines by planning in advance.
??? work now, play later.
??? stay on topic and finish the discussion.
??? be very time-conscious.
??? make plans and follow them.
??? feel best reaching closure.

Perceivers tend to prefer living life in a spontaneous, flexible way, aiming to understand life and adapt to it. Thus, they tend to keep their options open and ignore lists even if they make them.

Those with a P preference tend to:

??? leave things ???where ever???.
??? create crises just to solve them.
??? be more playful and casual.
??? enjoy surprises and adapt to changes.
??? be easily distracted.

??? keep options open until the last minute.
??? prefer openness to new information.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENHANCING COMMUNICATION:
THE SENSING AND INTUITIVE PREFERENCES

If you have an S preference and are communicating with someone with an N preference...

??? Begin by briefly describing the "big-picture," the global scheme, broad issue, or general concept which your details will eventually support or point to. Only after this can you move on to fill in the details and still expect to keep the N's attention.
??? Do not overwhelm N's with the details. Let them imagine the possibilities for themselves. Once they have the concept, then they can ask you for details.
??? Give the N's conceptual ideas (S's too often call them "half-backed") a fighting chance -- you will need their view of what is possible.
??? When listening to an N's idea, provide the facts as a contribution to the discussion.
??? Make every effort not to continuously take the N's literally. They prefer to speak in figurative terms. Ask them, or help them when necessary, to give more literal meaning to what they are trying to communicate to you (e.g., "Do you mean that...?", or, "So, what you are saying is...?").
??? Point out the long-term benefits to be derived and opportunities to be opened up from what you are suggesting. Emphasize the non-routine aspects.
??? Allow N's the opportunity to explore novel and unusual suggestions and opportunities without immediately pointing out the many reasons why they will not work. Encourage their imagination.
??? Whenever possible, try to be tolerant of the N's need to bypass the agenda when they have a sudden insight. Then, respectfully bring them back to the agenda when it is appropriate.
??? Help yourself by developing appropriate tolerance of the N's tendency to present information in a roundabout and non-sequential way. Perhaps even help the N structure the information in a more orderly format for presentation elsewhere.
??? Be forewarned that N's often work in bursts and spurts (at the points of their inspirations and intuitions), not with an even steady flow.
??? Make an effort to be tolerant of the N's tendency to look beyond standard procedures and ways of thought. It is possible that these very procedures may be getting in the way.
??? Remember that your pragmatism is fine, but don't be too much the imposer of reality. Given the respect and the support of an S, N's will often find a way to make the seemingly impossible actually work.
??? Keep in mind the N goals: They want an open ended solution and opportunity for inspirations to come to them.

Overview: Therefore, realize that the way in which you as an S arrive at an understanding of something, construct a plan, or generate ideas is exactly reversed for the N's. They need to move from the "big picture" or concept to the concrete details.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENHANCING COMMUNICATION:
THE SENSING AND INTUITIVE PREFERENCES

If you have an N preference and are communicating with someone with an S preference...

Overview: Realize that the way in which you as an N arrive at an understanding of something, construct a plan, or generate ideas is exactly reversed for the S's. They need to move from concrete details to the "big picture" or concept.

??? Keep in mind the S goals: They would really prefer a workable solution and enjoy staying in the here and now.
??? Begin by stating your topic explicitly and concretely. Translate your concepts into meaningful, concrete examples and facts.
??? Have the details (facts, examples, and evidence) worked out in advance. Illustrate your points with examples familiar to your S audience. Present the facts and details in an orderly sequence showing the steps involved and lead toward your ultimate concept or "big-picture." At all times be direct (and considerate).
??? Point out the immediate benefits or realistic applications to be derived from what you are suggesting. Emphasize its practicality and document successful applications.
??? Demonstrate how your suggestion is a reasonable extension of that which is currently in placed or operating. If you present ideas as radical changes to the status quo do not expect the S's to applaud.
??? Give S's a chance to fill in details as you go. You need their thorough input to actualize your idea.
??? Finish your sentences. S's do not enjoy reading between your lines. Connect your discussion with your flow of thoughts by explaining where your points came from.
??? Provide notice when you are changing the subject. Be open to the fact that the S may not want to change the subject as soon as you may want to.
??? Make every effort to say what you mean. That is, try to be concrete and practical. Ground your concepts in concrete evidence and familiar examples.
??? Make every effort to take the S's literally. Do not read multiple levels of meaning into an S's statement. If you are not sure which they might mean, ask them if your perception is correct.
??? Help them to identify what details you need and do not need (e.g., "We can work on that part later. What I need to know now is...").
??? Be cautious in making suggestions which, in their current form, are not straightforward and feasible.
??? If you must deviate from the agenda, do so respectfully and return to it when possible.
??? Make an effort to be respectful and tolerant of the S's reliance on and masterful use of established procedures and routines. They are the ones who keep the system running smoothly.
??? Remember that your idealism is fine, but what most often influences an S is seeing the practicality and realism of an idea.

TYPE TIPS FOR RESOLVING
CONFLICT

EXTRAVERTS: STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN. E???s always think they can talk their way through - and out of - most conflicts. The very thing they find most difficult is what may be needed most: listening to the other person???s point of view.

INTROVERTS: EXPRESS YOURSELF. As difficult as it often is, and sometimes seemingly redundant, it still is imperative to tell your side of the story - and maybe even tell it again until the other person has heard it. Where conflict is concerned, a little overkill can help. Make sure you get a hearing.

SENSORS: THERE???S MORE TO CONFLICTS THAN JUST THE FACTS. Sometimes, though it seems a waste of energy and may appear to cloud the issue, it is important to look at extenuating circumstances. If someone always disagrees with you no matter what you say, there may be issues involved that need attention other than just the situation of the moment.

INTUITIVES: STICK TO THE ISSUES. N???s want to relate conflict to the total picture. That???s not always appropriate or helpful. It clouds the specifics and complicates resolution. Sometimes it helps just to settle a simple dispute, which then allows you to deal with the bigger issue.
THINKERS: ALLOW SOME GENUINE EXPRESSIONS OF EMOTIONS. Thinkers become unglued when others cry at work; they act similarly when people hug or express warmth. But these emotions - at work or anywhere else - are integral to conflict resolution. Even if you???re unable to express these things yourself, you should allow others the freedom to do so.

FEELERS: BE DIRECT AND CONFRONTATIVE: The world won???t come to an end if you say something you really mean, even if it is negative. What sounds harsh to you as you say it probably won???t be received as harshly by other types; they???ll probably even appreciate and respect your frankness. If you are given to expressing a lot of emotion, don???t apologize or feel guilty for doing so. Being up front about your feelings facilitates constructive resolutions.

JUDGERS: YOU???RE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. It may be difficult to believe this, but you must if you want a conflict to ever be resolved. J???s see the world as black and white, right and wrong, and have difficulty accepting opposing points of view. It???s hard to negotiate with someone who thinks she or he is always right.

PERCEIVERS: TAKE A CLEAR POSITION. P???s can often argue both sides because they truly see both sides of an argument. Sometimes it comes in the form of playing devil???s advocate. While flexible and adaptive, that???s not always helpful to resolving a problem. It may even intensify the dispute. If you really feel strongly about something, better to take a stand and defend it.
