You're referring to his actual waist size, not his pants size. You can have a huge gut and still wear a 34 cause most guys carry their weight in their belly.

I haven't been able to fit in my 34's (loose, straight leg) since I started this new journey. My legs and wife won't let me fit them anymore. Tried on 36's and still to tight around the quads and ass, I need 38's to look comfortable in pants. My waist is still 34 easy though...
