so if you do them behind the neck its gonna hit the posterior (back part) deltoid better?

I dont know actually, I dont do anything behind the neck; just to be safe. I still do them every now and then to the front but im trying to concentrate on bringing up the medial and rear heads of the delts.

Seated, to the front, with the smith machine, my last set is usually 200lbs x 6. That's taking into account a 15lb bar instead of the 45lb olympic bar.

Man, some of you guys make me feel like a girl when it comes to military presses. I absolutely suck at them. They're by far one of my weakest exercises. I need to really work on them since it would probably benefit my bench to have more shoulder strength.

I can put up 135 for 11 or 12 reps. That makes my max a little over 175, which is more than pathetic for my current size.

I read an interview with Jay Cuttler once and he said that anyone who did Military Press behind their back was stupid. Due to the fact that it could cause injury (to the rotator cuff I believe). I personally still do them behind the back, but only on the smith machine.

I did them on Smith behind the back too, copen. I switched as my strength progressed to a free weight front press to try and prevent damage to the cuff. I wouldn't think that doing a behind the neck is stupid, but certainly more risky generally speaking.

Is there any advantage to behind the neck? If not why do them, instead of to the front?

Like a front squat, I'd say its easier to center the weight over your spine with behind the neck. When used though many do not go below the ears which keeps your elbows somewhat parallel to the floor, helping to avoid rotator damage.

I finally stopped all overhead pressing, mostly because the incline bench I use is already steep. I also do only one set for any other delt movements, very low volume. Some people (powerlifters primarily) only do some side lateral work, everything else is 'covered' by rows and presses.

My best ever on the overhead press (seated) is 180lbs

I think LAM should be banned from posting in 1RM threads. He makes everyone else look like a pussy.

I do something like 135 x 4-5. Arg.
