I think taste and smell work together. If you have ever lost your sense of smell when you were sick, you'll know what i mean. Everything tastes bland as hell without smell. I was able to take shot of vodca or whiskey, and there was no bite at all. It was like water with a tiny bit of flavoring. Needless to say I still got drunk as hell.
I think there was a very similar test done with Semen a while back.

Well if you smell something then some particles where the smell came from is in the air. So if something leaks gas..
