ok, i need some advice on which grip i should use. right now on my back exercise i do the following

wide grip lat pull downs
bent over bb row-overhand grip
low cable pulls-palms facing each other
bb shrugs- overhand

my question is this, since i'm doing overhand for lat pulldowns and shrugs, and palms facing each other for the cable pulls, should i use an underhand grip for my bent over rows?

thanks in advance

That is not a bad idea. I always make sure to include at least one overhand, underhand, and parallel grip movment when training back.

I am not sure which grip i like more for bent over rows. I do both of them.

Seems to me you get a better stretch at the top with an overhand grip.

Pull-ups, grab as wide as the bar goes. Brings out the width, nice and burning.

Using WIDE grips reduces the range of motion for the lats.

What's your point? Range of motion doesnt' necessarily determine benefit, as depending on the exercise, the ROM doesn't make it any easier. Look at where Arnold gripped: WAY out.

Are you suggesting that reducing the range of motion is a benefit?? Who cares where Arnold gripped, what does that have to do with anything?

If anyone wants to know one of the reasons that wide grip pullups are harder than close grips, it's probably because you are using a small fraction of your lats and bringing much more bicep brachii, trapezius, or rhomboids action into play.

This isn't to suggest never to do them, but all things being equal, they offer much less benefit than the alternative.

Wide grips fuck my shoulder up, as i weigh a million pounds.

I don't agree. For width, I find few things better than wide-grip pulls.

Good reasoning.

I agree.

I was taking a crap tonight and reading a book tonight on this same subject. Duncan has been 100% correct with everything he has said. I have already changed my routine around for my thursday back workout because of this, thanks for saving me time to not have to ask it.
