I am 16 years old 5'9 147 pounds. i want to gain 10-20 pounds in 5 months. ive done research about working out twice a day but it said some people it worked for them, some it didnt. if i worked out 5 days a week twice a day, would i be over training or will i gain some serious muscle?

over training i'd say.. i'm only a rookie myself but from your stats you're an ectomorph.. you need more rest less training and you're going for the exact opposite

doing legs at say 3 pm(squats, lunges hamstring curls) and then different leg workouts at 11pm power cleans, plyometrics, deadlifts). next day doing bench, shoulder press, rows at 3 pm, then close grip bench press, shrugs, curls, dips chinups etc at 11 pm? next day break. then repeat.

arnie n them said they used to train for like 5 hours a day thats crazy! dont know if its true lol

I honestly don't think it's necessary. Guys have been getting huge by using basic routines for decades. Not to say that more isn't better, the guys that get huge obviously train harder and more often, but only to a point. If you get your diet in check and put in a good 5-6 days a week of well designed training, there is no need to spend 4 hours in the gym everyday. IMO.

At your age, weight, and experience level there is no need to be in the gym that much. Even if you were a greatly chemically enhanced pro with many years of hard training under your belt it would probably be too much. You don't grow by putting in more time, you grow when you rest and doing two a days 5 days a week is a sure way to hit overtraining in no time. Bottom line is if you are working hard enough to break down muscle and getting enough food and rest you will grow much better than spending several hours a day in the gym. Four days, five at max is all you need with a decent routine, solid nutrition and rest.

I did twice day when I first started out. Worked great for the first 6 months, I have been dealing with one injury after another ever since.

eaglesfan: working out twice a day could be beneficial but not in your situation. in your case i would not worry about gaining weight so rapidly you are only 16 for god's sake. To gain weight you have to train heavy with intensity and rest well between workouts. but for you, working out heavy and intense will probably lead to injury coz i bet you have no experience in lifting. So what i would suggest is you work out big muscles like chest , back legs twice a week and biceps triceps and shoulders once a week and eat well cocentrate on good form and technique and please stop worrying about your weight!
working out twice a day is good but each session should not exceed 40 mns (including warm up) doing one muscle at a time. It is time consuming and is recommended for experienced bodybuilders and people who have time on their hands ....a bit early for you.
here is a program you can follow;
monday: Chest/ triceps
tuesday: legs/abs
wednesday; back/ biceps
Thursday: rest
friday:Chest (only 6 basic intense sets)/shoulders
Saturday: Back or legs ( only 6 basic sets alternate every week)
Sunday: rest or abs
