actually...a lot of these "gang", "ghetto" dogs wind up in new england because the stigma just isn't there

there's a few suburbanites on my road and some very wealthy people around here that have adopted pits
I picked her because she was sweet, had great body language with my kids and little dog and seemed devoid of bad habits. She also had been treated savagely by someone and I took extreme pity on her.

for 50 bucks I got a dog with a free spay/neuter voucher , full vacs, wormed, she's housebroken, a dream on a leash, has whats called a "soft mouth", and is an affectionate animal that's attractive to look at (I think so anyway). She also doesn't startle at all to children running around or seem to interested in chasing them which is potentially dangerous.

and I don't think she's making the macho cut with her pink hearts collar, pink heart id tag and wagging tail.

this morning I sent her into my oldest daughters room to wake her up...amusing for me and the dog :)

Lol That whole wannabe a wigger, look at my viscious dogg woof woof...!

I don't think you fit that criteria Sheri.

yeah I don't think so either...lol

Dear asshole gang-banger wannabe,

If you are going to bring your muzzled, sedated, dickhead rednose pit to the same clinic my pit is at pls have it under control or euthanized before my dog does it for you.

thank you,

Sheri

yeah..I normally agree but I guess I kind of freaked because of the dogs really aggressive posture. I realize it should be neutered (what he was there for) but if your dog is THAT aggressive towards other dogs and possibly people you should have a VERY firm handle on it and likely bring it to a vet, not a clinic and make the appointment in such a way that the vet can accomidate you not waiting with other people/dogs present.

I did NOT expect the new adoptee to meet the challenge instantly , putting herself between me and the other dog...
I'm glad that when I grabbed her cheek to pull her back (don't ask) she stopped herself from going after me when she whirled around...
she was all dancing around raised hackles in front of me after that. Thank god she was a big softee (her normal self) for the vet when we finally got in to see her.

I also sort of realized today she's twice the size of most other pits

She's just doing what she's supposed to do, and that's protecting her master. And the male dog is just trying to do its thing. When a male dog gets that fever he'll jump fences in search of a female, 9 out 10 dogs you see splattered in the streets/freeways are male dogs that were in search of some tail.

A responsible dog owner wouldn't put a dog aggresive dog in a roomful of dogs, a vet tech will go to your car and give it it's shots.

What did you name your new girl, anyway?

Oh, Mystique after the blue villian in Xmen...someone mentioned yesterday I should call her Ms. Marvel instead

she's starting to answer to "Myst"

I've never owned a dog so this will be a fairly random noob question. But as dogs come from and still maintain a pack instinct, why don't they try to test owners for the alpha position? I mean over time could they not wonder if you really are dominant? What are the basic reasons that you are?

its not a noob question at all ...you've stumbled in to a bit of controversy as well.

The science isn't in favor of this line of thinking and thats a fairly new development...entire theories on dog training are based around alpha/pack behavior and I myself have trained dogs in this manner.

I'm actually going with what some consider bribery or only positive reinforcement training for the new dog and its honestly going beautifully but I'm exploiting her desire to please people. I can sincerely say I've never had a dog "heel" as well as she does with this method. After today's misadventures I'm going to be working on higher focus on me from her...but to be fair I've had her a week and this is the first time I haven't had her undivided attn. She's done phenomenally well in very high movement/distraction settings until now.

I think protective instinct may have kicked in for her today and we'll need to work on that.

and to ad to that I have only ever owned and seen on truly alpha personality dog in my life and he was incredibly difficult to manage because if he felt I over corrected him...I'd get bit.

Food, love & loyalty may be all a dog wants to receive and give. Without knowing more about wild dog/wolf packs its difficult to know where a dog 'sees' itself exactly and that probably doesn't translate at all to domestic regular food arrangments. They are after all in fucking paradise compared.

And certainly why not exploit a dog's intentions if it's win/win? Seems fine to me.

Alpha dogs I guess don't last long with owners unless they eventually kowtow or succumb to the easy life.

I had him 7 of his 9 years on this planet.

I don't mean the slightly flaky, doesn't like plastic bags kind of screwed up dog

I mean the face fucked right the fuck up cuts and bruises everywhere had to be coaxed out of a ball kind of fucked up ...oh and seriously emaciated and obviously bred several times..

she is a really pretty blue pitt that I seriously doubt is mixed with anything...but was the only dog out of more than ten the entire family (and family dog) seemed to like because she was very warm to everyone and especially relaxed around the smaller kids without being out of her mind high strung ..

you think it can be trusted or let it get euthed ?

someone may step up to adopt her..idk but we didn't even know she was in the kennel because she was hiding in the back of it...
I've had shepherds that would rip your face right off, one of which was beaten pretty badly before I got him and he was seriously the best dog I've ever had.

dogs really bugging me

whaddya think?

NO. FUC*ING. WAY.

If there is ANY chance that thing can have something that triggers a memory from the past, I would never take that chance.

Dogs are too much work. Gotta clean up the poop, walk them, have hair all over your house, feed them at least twice a day. No thanks.

Most fighting dogs interact with human masters well but not other dogs
But you mentioned abused dog... So depends how the dog interacts with you the master was she abused for fights or abused for...

Your best test would be to see how the dog interacts with you. If she can't then don't get the dog if she comes out of the shell and is able to interact some give it a shot

abused n dogs that are fought are def in the same category moron

i've been able to befriend abused dogs before. i tend to believe that dogs can see through people's bullshit, and are able to bond with people who really care for them. no one (dog or otherwise) should be written off due to their past.

i love pits. that's a horribly mislabeled breed of dog. i've been bitten by more dachunds than any other breed of dog. and i still love all dogs.

Why It's Ridiculous People Still Think Pit Bulls Are Inherently Mean (INFOGRAPHIC)

Just being realistic here. Im a pit lover and a lover of dogs in general esp the so callrd dangerous breeds. Ive had German Shepherds, Akitas( love their personality), Dobermans and Rotties. I have never haf a one of those bite me and i and friends if mine have rescued abused dogs. I was bitten once however requiring an ER trip and stitches caused from being dumb enough to pull 2 dogs apart who were fighting. My stupidity but the one who got me was a pit. Not his fault but mine entirely but i mention it because it doesn't matter the intent, if id broke up a wiener dog fight and been bitten i need a band aid....an abused dog can be quirky and can love you but still have a reaction to some situation and snap at you. If its a pit its gonna do damage so just be careful, not afraid and jumpy but aware that they're awesomely fast and strong. From one pit lover to the others...its just a fact.

luckily shes turned into a completely different animal than the girl I first met.
shes a happy go-lucky goof ball that likes the sun, naps, snacks, snuggling, kids, small animals and more napping.
she loves loves loves people of all kinds. shes too big and clumsy to play with little kids unsupervised but mainly because shes gets soooo happy and excited around kids, not that I would anyway.

only lingering problem I have with her is a little reactivity to larger dogs and she has a fuckload of skin allergy issues alot of which are clearing up with the season change so i guess a costco sized package of zyrtec is in order in the spring.
oh, and shes hard headed as hell...I invested in an exceptional trainer for her and its paid off in spades though. This trainer blows me away. He taught her to down-stay with a flat collar on her in an hr with heavy distractions including other dogs, treats and people she had never seen before...just sheer persistence and a belief that she had the intelligence to understand what he was asking of her. My relationship with her changed a lot after that.

So happy for you Sheri. I never saw this thread until today and read it all the way through, hoping it would have a happy ending.
