would you adopt a pitt bull that had been obviously abused

dumb risk maybe but i'm glad it worked out. and she is a pocket pittie so not too sure that factored in to his believing she was just scared. look at some vids of what it sounds like in a high volume kill shelter. the dogs are terrified. pollie was due to be killed cuz her fear made her defensive. sometimes a leap of faith can save a life. the walkers liked her though and spoke highly of her. it's why they went to get her.

I'm all for saving dogs. But lots of people lack common sense when it comes to dogs. If a dog growls at you, then at the very least that means give the dog a little space. Hang out with the dog for a little bit and let it see that you're not a threat. Then, the dog will likely come up to you. If not, try to approach the dog again with a soft voice and extend your hand for a sniff (you should be standing don't get in the dogs face) . If it growls again, then repeat. A growling dog can bite. So bringing it up to your face/throat is the last thing you want to do.

ive got a cousin with a 4inch scar on the side of her face from an adopted pitbull, comes with fucked up eyesight cause the eye wont focus...........why take the chance.........

every dog person/nutt says their dog would'nt hurt a fly, UNTIL it kills someones dog, a kid or a person...........

right, but this any breed

labs topped the list for years for dog bites...think a lab can't do major damage? think again.

I adopted her today. We pick her up on Monday.

she was happy to see me and not exuberant but she gave me a quick kiss then resumed ignoring me. watching her today I noticed that more than anything she was afraid of the other dogs.
She won't go into gen pop in my home until her training is complete and this will include training with a group that works specifically potentially dangerous animals with socialization. I actually don't think obedience training will go too badly...she was very easy to walk today. And by gen-pop I mean her crate won't even be on the main level of my house until then. She'll never be trusted unattended with anything other than adults in my home.

Today she was easy to handle...she let me handle her feet, ears and tail without issue but didn't let me look in her mouth at all...she wasn't aggressive or annoyed by it at all though...just moved her head. She also breaks eye contact if you stare at her which is a good sign.

i just kinda skimmed through this so forgive me if this has already been said but the bloodline means a lot when it comes to pitbulls. As far as the abuse as long as you have no small chaildren or other animals around and a lot of patience i think once the dog gets comfortable around you and learns you aren't a threat to it she will come around and probaly be the most loyal and sweet dog ever. I love pitbulls i had 2 of them before i moved into my new house and had to part ways with them becasue of my neighborhood rules. blue pits do have a lot of health problems more than the typical pit because they were inbred so many times to get the color.

I think alot of the pitt bulls Mike Vick had for fighting were adopted, and they were treated bad

we can have opinions here but some people that were abused are dangerous and some aren't. just spend time with her and you will be the one that can decide. i hope she makes it.

Did you ever see the Deer Hunter ? Thats how that guy treated his dogs.

That shit breaks what is left of my cold heart. Honestly, I would take the risk, but that responsibility can only be owned by you. You can not ensure other people's safety, so unless the dog is only ever around people who know the risk and have accepted those risk, then it is unfair to other people for you to bring that type of danger around them.

It is a fucked situation. I believe the dog can be socialized, but will take a lot of knowledge, skill, and time. I won't fault you no matter what you decide.

Tough call but like most have said with kids I would have reservations. I am a dog owner as well...

That quick kiss says a lot, in no time at all you'll wonder who loves who more.

She sounds like she's in good hands.

I adopted her...in case anyone missed it from earlier..

she is signed up with me to go through a socialization class starting about 48hrs after she hits my home which we'll be going to 5 days a week for the next month or so or longer if need be. ....her crate is already situated in a separate area of my home that no one needs to walk through.
I am considering putting her food dishes in my wine cellar because its off of the area of the home shes going to in for the foreseeable future and its very quiet in there...three walls of concrete, below grade and whatnot in the hopes it will make her feel safe to eat/relax while eating. The crate and food placement also puts her near one of the doors that has a separate fencing area so she wont be near the children's fenced area or my other dogs underground fenced area...so totally isolated but able to get to where I park my car and jeep and her own fenced area for non- training time.

None of this is bullet proof but its about as reasonable as one can get I think without an actual training ring.

ya, I was pretty surprised by it!

I thought while looking at her today when I was walking her that she was scarred but still standing and doing it with a bit of dignity...I could relate.

See, certain dogs and their masters are meant for eachother, they resemble us more than we think.

Dont listen to LittleWing. She wanted to adopt Kai the hitchhiker and he ended up SMashing another persons skull in. Years of cocaine abuse have rendered here decision making useless.

An abused pit is a liability. Adopt at your own risk.

lol. Kai says he was drugged and sexually assaulted. i think it was a gay for pay deal that got ugly. i did wonder how you so expertly nailed his type as dangerous

This dog is gonna go Cujo on sheri. And then she's gonna look like Carrie at the prom. Then said Pitbull will be buried in the pet sematary.

shouldn't be staring any dog in the face

well here's to hoping the quick kiss was not really a quick taste....

shouldn't be staring any dog in the face

under uncontrolled conditions...you're right. I don't recommend it if you aren't prepared to be attacked.
but its a great way to see if she's dominant or submissive and children do it unknowingly to animals
she didn't even try to hold to gaze which is a good sign...I'd rather know what I'm in for.

least you didn't punch it in the face... my son met a new dog at the park...he almost immediately punched it in the face...."That's not dana" I said
