I have recently had quite a bit of wrist pain when benching 300lbs+ (flat), My last chest work out I finished with 1 rep @330lbs I managed the weight but my wrists hurt for a couple of minutes afterwords. Is this acceptable or can I reduce the pain for the couple of minutes after the lift? :hmmm:

This sound pretty common to me, your probably using a fairly wide grip. Some basic wrist wraps work pretty well, just put 'em on before you go heavy next time. I have narrowed my grip by about 1 1/2 inches and it has decreased my wrist pain significantly.

Mine dont usually hurt except when the weight is over them, and right now its my forearm not just wrist.

* Make sure the weight is centered over the forearm, to reduce wrist strain
* Buy wrist wraps if the problem continues

The maximum legal competition grip is forefinger at the ring.

thanks guys, my grip is normally with forefinger at the ring, think will buy some wrist supports see if that helps, wraps as in straps?

Yeah, they just "wrap" around your wrist with a bit of velcro. Wraps. Straps. Same thing to me.

thanks ive got a pair of straps havent been using them lately will give them a go and see if they help :thumb:

My grip is usually my middle finger at the ring. Sometimes I feel some stiffness in my forearm, and I'm not going near as heavy as you guys:confused:

are you still on the M1T? when i was on it i got sore easier from everything, and also since my 1RM was shooting up super-fast, my hands werent used to carrying that weight, so i got sore wrists as well.

A wrap serves to wrap around the joint and provide some support, and even a little localized warmth from trapped heat.

A strap is for people who have grip issues.

Example Wraps

Thanks Mudge. DBD, no not on M1T stopped after 2 weeks a few weeks ago

Sean keep up the good work you will get there! Cool website maywell order some clothing etc :thumb:

Do you guys wrap your thumb around the bar or do you place your thumb on the back with your fingers? When I wrapped my thumb around the bar it put allot different pressure on my wrists than my thumb behind the bar with my fingers.

Some people don't like this grip because its not a grip at all, so some feel it's a safety issue. What "grip" do you use

Thanks! I just got my wisdom teeth out last tuesday for it's sucked for a little over a week, but I just went to the gym for the first yesterday and felt great, although I'm still not eating as much as before and I lost a few lbs  Hopefully it won't take too long to get back.

My thumb on the back of bar with with my fingers, benched 160kg today (352lbs)( with slight assist) :)

BNS what you weighing in at? Any photos to put up? How long have you been lifting, age etc. Good luck for Friday :thumb:

ignore me just reading your info now

Im 34. Been lifting off and on for years but finally got serious 4 months ago and it feels great! Im much heavier than I want to be at6'1 and 278 with alot of bodyfat that Im trying to lose WHILE Im gaining strength. Its been working. I have lost 2 inches off of my waste in the past month and put on 2" in my shoulders/chest in the same amount of time. Thanks for the encouragement.

no problem keep up the good work :thumb:

Thats called a suicide grip. I liked it for awhile, but it is outlawed in competition so I stopped using it.

I saw this question but there was a whole other thread about this grip yesterday and I didnt want to start it all over again. I have seen at least 3 different guys DROP THE WEIGHT on themselves while using the suicide grip...one guy was DURING a competition (illegally) with 3 spotters and it STILL nailed him with 300+pounds on the bar! Dont even try it, its not worth it.

the only time i ever got wrist pain from benching was on CG bench's, when i brought the bar to my upper chest, but now it doesnt happen at all

I didn't see the post on this "grip" the other day thats why I asked (ooops) I wanted to point out when I use the grip around the bar it seems to stretch my thumb out and transfer allot of strain to my wrists. I now use the suicide grip because it puts most of the weight straight down to my wrists and forearms. I've personally haven't come close to dropping any bars on myself but lifter beware it's definitely possible.

I never had wrist pain.....you need to strengthen them.

C'mon now, just because YOU never had wrist pain you say that? Pain in joints and other places doesnt always have to do with under-training or lack of strength. I have done manual labor since I was 20yrs old working with my hands/wrists/arms constantly for 14years and I get the occasional ache or pain. Wrist paid COULD be from bad form, COULD be from getting too strong too fast, COULD be hereditary.....and yes it COULD be from lack of strength. If I get tendinitus in my elbow is that from lack of strength too? Im not dogging you at all Maynard, your post was lacking something.
