I'm trying to choose a gym and was wondering if some of you could offer an opinion. This is my first post here, but I've worked out in a gym before (world gym) so I'm not a total newbie, but no expert either. I'm trying to get back into weights now.

goals: add 10 lbs of overall muscle mass, current weight: 165

There is a small gym where I work, it has plenty of dumbells and portable benches, but no free weight bench press. There is a Smith machine with plenty of plates, but no free weight squat rack. There is a portable incline and decline bench.

There is a pulley machine for lat pull downs and rowing, leg extension machines and various other leg machines.

My question is, do you think I will "grow out" of this gym quickly? The lack of bench press kind of bothers me. I can use dumbells but by the time you get in to the heavy weights dumbells get more awkward to work with, at least in my experience.

I get a work benefit of $240 a year if I want to join a gym. I can apply that to the in-house gym, or get re-imbursed for an outside gym. I've been by Gold's but I'm not sure If I can work out with Britney Spears blasting in my ear for an hour and not go crazy.

Thanks for any help.

no free weight squat or bench, find a new place. most important is to have a gym where you can dead squat and bench. You need a power rack at the least. go somewhere else with the equipment you need, you can always use a cd player or MP3 which i highly reccommend anyways

You want to start with Basic motions...
Re-Learn the techniques...

Workout with guys bigger than yourself, not with chix, not alongside the elderly

definitely choose this bigger gym. you need a squat rack. period. perhaps you can get by without a barbell bench, but chances are you will quickly outgrow the dumbells in a small gym. i also like the eye candy in the larger gyms, but that's just me. (i'm also one of the a-holes who turns the workout into social hour, so keep in mind where the advice is coming from.)
