Hypothetically, A person takes in 1.5 gallons of water a day. They drink in the gym (about a gallon). Should this be counted as that part of that 1.5 gallions a day, or should that be included in the 1.5 or as extra? sorry for the math problem.

Some experts don't buy into the theory that most americans are chronically dehydrated, stating that we get water in small or even large amounts from EVERYTHING....and that after thousands of years of evolution, ridding ourselves of a properly triggered thirst mechanism would be a step backwards. If you buy into this line of thought, then there really is no measure of how much water you should be drinking in a day. Just food for thought....
I myself drink water with most meals, milk with some. Water when I workout and all throughout the day, I don't measure it out, just drink when I'm thirsty.

She can prey on my mantis any day.
i start sweating after my warmup. i'm bald so I wear baseball caps. By the time my cardio and workout is done, holy sheeeeeit, that hat is soaked and disgusting so to answer the question I am using up a lot of water.I agree and disagree, if that's possible. While I posted the general advice given to athletes regarding hydration, I don't agree that all your water intake has to be in the form of actual water or fluid drank throughout the day. When you eat, you get water from your foods, and that should count toward your water intake as well. So thank you for pointing that out. It is often overlooked.
if you're not an endurance athlete or spend an unusual time outside in hot weather performing some sort of activity (soccer, football, manual labor) and don't lose buckets of fluids a day, hydration for normal people is where you're at, just be sure to drink some water throughout the day and not go all day like a camel wihtout taking a sip.
If you DO perform endurance training (cycling, running, etc.) or are outside in the heat for a prolonged period of time, you should definitely be more aware of your water intake and NOT wait until you feel thirsty. By then you are already in a dehydrated state.
but if you read the article from tnation it states that by the moment you sense thirst, youre beyond dehyrdated.
Uh oh, I just gotta little thirsty doin all this typin, I better hurry before it's too late!!!![]()
does a light, summery maize color count????Goalgetters reply is a sound one. Unless your urine after your workout is dark (indicating dehydration status), you're probably OK with your current intake. Add a little more post workout if you are worried, but consider also your protein intake, as it can cause some mind dehydration as well. If its high (2 grams or more per pound bodymass) drink a little more water. Ditto if you use dextrose in your protein drinks post workout for recovery.

Just to add to that..... B vits will screw with urine color as well so it's not always dehydration....mind you, B vitamins have a pretty distinct reaction....so it's important to recognize the difference.
