downloading/uploading speeds

The Comcast routers could be uncapped by using TFTP to make the modem ignore the real TFTP servers.

Very interesting. The only thing I have used TFTP for is to put files to my web server at school. Somebody donated some money to our school, so CIS got a web server lab. Every student in ITE-453 gets their own web server for a semester. I was .

Just click on the radio button that reads "auto" or something like that. I've been using this site since 1997. This will set your network settings so that they will run at their best.

Optimal button?

tried running speed test with firewall off got same results.

I've never heard of cable speeds that slow. I have the basic in my area and here is my download speed:

N-i-i-ce.

Yeah, I don't know if it works anymore, but the modems would download their cap speed from TFTP server back at the home office. Basically what you would do it connect to the modem's interface, change the setting so that your PC was the authority and give it a really high cap.

That sounds about right.

I used this on a 256kb DSL line back in 98 and went from 22Kb to 64Kb.

did it and rebooted still got same speeds :( It isn't worth it to upgrade to the faster cable it is more than double the price, I will just live with slow downloads, lol

another computer question :)
I am trying to install my aol (mcafee) virus protection, but when I try to it says that I already have norton protection, so the installation fails... the thing is I don't have norton! how can I make sure there is no norton security on my computer? I checked add/remove programs but there is nothing.

ok gotta bump this. I upgraded about a week ago to the highest speed connection of road runner (supposed to be 5 meg per sec), and I am still getting the same exact results in the speed test as before I upgraded (.09megabytes download, .02 megabytes upload)
WTF is going on

Give us a recap of what you have done so far ... too many posts to sort out.

You upgraded your cable connection, used a reg cleaner, and what else?

I wonder why my speed is faster compared to others here, I guess I would have an advantage over other in on line gaming.

5mb Service. Thinking of upgrading to 10mb

is downloading/uploading speeds all about your internet connection or is it your computer too? my speeds are horrible, but I thought they are supposed to be good because I have a cable connection :(

your hard disk may be the problem either it has a slow writing speed or it's old with bad sectors and stuff. your computer configuration will efeect it (processor , ram , data transfer cables in the mother board ...etc) , the windows security settings would have an effect (either you have your firewall on or not , try turning it off) , your third party anti virus and internet protection program have a big role ....

try these tips:

1- first it's highly recommended that your downloads be in a seperate disk partition wich must be defragmented regularly. (since regular writing and deleting on the disk causes fragmentation)

2- have just one firewall and i don't recommend the windows firewall wich i think blocks every thing. (I don't use one , just a good anti virus and anti spyware/adware) .

3- check the ports in your router settings and make sure that your shareware program uses a seperate port.

4-maybe the problem is that there is not enough sources for the file you are downloading if you are using a p2p program.

ok called and got it sorted out, wasnt my pc it was stupid company. :)

Have you had a phone tech come out and test the quality of your lines?

I think its because there is to many people in the building with cable, I just got digital cable and it runs slow as shit, my friend that lives in a couple buildings down is 10x faster. Movies don't even run. Good thing the cable guy is coming, I will have him check out the internet as well.

sorry for the bump :D

this is what i get in the test now, but when downloading from file sharing sites (such as rapidshare) I still only get about 100kb/s :/

My roommate and I had the same problem for about 3 weeks. Something happened to our line that made a bandwidth drop to damn near nothing. We had to get a line tech to come to the apartment to check it, and drop a new line.

Sounds like they need to come in and boost the signal for the whole building, I mean if you are paying for digital service and getting shit then they are ripping you off...
