Hello,

I am 6'0 , 130 lbs. I need to bulk up. The trainer I might hire is suggesting eating a huge number of calories. However, I have a stomach problem. When I eat even a small amount of food, I become bloated. If I substitute protein shakes for food, will I get the same training results? Are protein shakes available sugar free? How do they taste?

Solid food > liquid food. Slower absorption.

If you are asking if my diet has been planned, no. Not yet. Neither has my weight training program.

I am new to weight training. Is slower absorbtion better? Is it better to have solid food?

If protein shakes provide faster absorbtion (and faster absorbtion is better), then why bother eating food? Why not just drink protein shakes?

You need to eat real food and plenty of it. Just eat, eat, eat.

Do you mean getting bloated or just plain full? You, like alot of ectomorphs(assuming you are one), need to eat past satiety to get bigger.

Protein shakes a great way to get in calories though. There is nothing wrong with them but I suggest not basing your diet around them.

Besides I believe using purely whey protein is pretty hard on the kidneys too, or is that just if you are taking in ridiculously excess protein?

I have some sort of stomach disorder. I used the wrong word. I am full, not bloated. Regardless, I can't eat any more than a small meal.

The last poster brought up possible medical problems with protien drinks. Is that something to concerned about?

Been there. Eat high calorie foods that YOU like and tolerate well. Once you put on weight you can refine your intake. Eat what you like and tolerate, bottom line. If you can add things like Ensure type drinks that's great. Work shakes and nutrition drinks in later or in addition to foods you like and tolerate well. Eat what YOU like.

You said some sort of stomach disorder...are you just assuming you have one or did a doctor diagnose you?

You have, maybe, a trainer, and a medical condition but figured you'd get information and medical advice off "the internets"?

Ask your trainer these questions, if he cannot answer them to your satisfaction find another trainer.

Liquid meals are easier to "eat", as you can gulp one down like a beer, which beats poking at a plate of food and thinking "Gawd..."

Make sure you get plenty of fiber too.

"Some sort of stomach disorder?" Exactly what is this disorder? From the way you are wording things, I'm getting the feeling this less of a "stomach disorder" and more of an eating disorder.

I thought I had some kind of "stomach disorder." It took doctorS 5 YEARS to figure out what he fuck was going on, Repro. Try eating 5000 cal a day to maintain weight while specialist shove all kinds of crap in you for.. YEARS. : (

You were 6'0", 130lbs? And where did he mention that he ate 5k calories a day and still couldn't gain weight? In fact, he said the very opposite.

"I can't eat any more than a small meal"

I guess I don't understand your point if there is one.

I did get a little excited there. He is leaving a lot out. Maybe he knows what he has.. maybe he doesn't??????????

Like I said, it might just be the case if you're taking in too much protein too. I can't remember the reason anymore honestly, but now that I think about it I think it's just if you're taking in massive amounts of protein, which is easy to do with a lot of shakes.

I have been diagnosed by some disorder by a physician. I have acid reflux as well. The bottom line is, I can't eat a lot of solid food.

Ask your physician to refer you to a dietician who deals with your problem.

Why would you risk your health if you have a GI disorder by asking people on an internet forum about your diet?

Especially since you don't even disclose what your problem is.

I would find ways to cure this disorder before you start embarking on a training career.
