Hello , im new to the forum , names TJ.Im 18 years young , 5'9 ish , maybe a little taller , and 147 lbs.Ive been casually lifting weights for about a year and a half now , nothing to serious. ive gotten a good bit more into it recently , and im wanting to become bigger. I eat alot more than i used to , but my metabolism is just killing me.I cant seem to gain any weight at all..I could seriously eat a cow and not gain 1 stinkin pound..SO i got to looking at supplements , possibly thinking about a weight gainer or something.I know i wont be able to just "bam" gain 30 lbs , like a pound every week and a half maybe , but i need something.Im all new to this so dont flame me to bad ha.My goal for now would be around 180 lbs if possible.I know that would take time , and i am willing to work for it.Can you guys help me out on this a little maybe? Maybe give me some pointers or a good supplement choice?Any help would be appreciated.
-Thanks

What does your diet look like now? How many calories are you consuming daily?

Haha it dont look good! I dont really keep up with everything , (like i know i should , especially if i want to gain) But i eat at least 4 good sized meals a day..If i had to guess , wich is hard , id say a little over 2000 calories if that maybe? I guess i need to start counting.

Well, changing your body starts with a solid understanding of how many calories you are putting in your body. If you wish to really dedicate yourself to putting on muscle mass you will have to keep track of your calories. That is the most important aspect of weight gain, or any change of weight for that matter.

As for supplements, avoid most "weight gainers" as they are mostly comprised of empty calories, like sugar. Whey protein is a great supplement. It is an easy way to meet your daily protein quota and get in some extra calories. Also for general health, fish oil is a great supplement that benefits several metabolic processes in your body.

But like I said, for any progress to made you are going to have to take your diet seriously. I've heard numerous people tell me that they are unable to gain any weight no matter how much they eat, but the thing is they don't really eat that much. It is all relative. Once you start putting down some serious calories you will think you ate so little in the past, when you used to think you were eating so much.

Have you read the stickies at the top of the diet&nutrition forum page?

I see..I will indeed start counting and keeping track of my calories when i can.

Alrighty sounds good.I dont usually get to eat as much protein rich meats as id like , mostly vegetables so the whey would probably help out on that..thanks

Yea i did.ha

thanks alot though!

You're welcome.

Also, when you count calories for a few weeks, eventually do you don't have to anymore because you know how much your meals contain. Like many people trying to gain weight, you may have to force feed past satiety.

Yea just read around the threads alot. You'll learn all you need to know. With that being said if youre serious then most of the "pros" on the board will ask you how much youre taking in: calories, fats, protein, carbs. If you don't want to keep track of that then we consider you not serious.

To sum up though. Most agree that if youre not gaining weight youre not eating enough. To gain muscle youre gonna have to put your body in a surplus, thus youre also gonna gain some fat. Thats just the way it goes, maybe unless youre using "helping agents". Yes Some people are true hard gainers and have a genetic disposition to being of "smaller or leaner frame" so its harder work for you guys. You should keep track though. You can go to fitday.com. Thats what many use. Good luck.

Yea im gonna start keeping track best i can , some stuff i eat i dont know how many calories are in it and such , like some restraunt food, but most stuff i can. I have no problem gaining a little fat on the way.Haha im staying away from the roids , ill pass on those.I know itll take a while and everything but thats fine , im not gonna die waiting ha. Ill check out fitday.com though , i appreciate the help guys. Im open to all knowledge , so if anyone has anything more that might help me with this or tips , or just whatever , im listening. Thanks alot

ha i cant stand tune...salmon now , i love..yea i guess ill have to spend a little more time in the supermarket than usual. i drink alot of milk..like 3 glasses a day containing 3 cups each. wich = 1350 cal. and 72g protein.(according to the jug)

I know how a budget goes...all to well..ha

thats what gets me to. alot of stuff i eat is at resturaunts like the other night i had a ribeye steak and steamed vegetables..how the heck am i supposed to know the calories on this stuff...so i dont count those.

and yes..i am wanting to gain muscle..i know ill gain some fat on the way but i dont care.

fitday.com or thedailyplate.com should have some usefull references on the calories of your steak dinner

its tough in that situation though
you cant weigh it
and you dont know etc...

start keeping up and you will build a mental database..
it wont be long before keeping track is second nature...

I eat more than 2000 calories a day, and I'm a middle-aged woman who's smaller than you. Try 3000 a day.

Excellent advice so far.
