Serious question - In what instance can protein supplements cause heart problems?

My mum who, like all mums, always talks about her children to her friends. She was talking to her good friend who is a pharmacist, and she mentioned that I take protein & weight gain shakes, which my mum dislikes. Her friend said the amount of protein I take from things such as eggs, meats and fish aren't a problem, but it's the supplements that could cause damage.

I'm asking this question for two reasons; one, to show my mum that what I'm taking is fine, and two, that I wanna know my heart is fine taking these things.

So can protein supplements cause heart problems? Is it to do with the additives, and if so; what additives should I watch out for?

WTF?

This is the obvious reason this guy is a pharmacist and not a doctor. Ask him to produce some studies that suggest whey protein causes heart issues. This should shut him up for awhile.

Too much protein can stress the kidneys but I haven't heard nor seen anything that suggest it cause heart related problems.

Yep, I read somewhere it is because of those dangerous ingredients in the proteins. I am not sure about heart problems, but read some of them will cause cancer. For this reasons I always buy unflavoured natural protein powder. I blend it with pure juice or pure sugar to make it taste good. I don't understant why these companies can't keep their proteins in natural form and save lots of money on those ingredients. It is waste of money for them and it is too unhealthy for us.

i would think consuming a great amount of protein from meats would cause more problems than an equal amount from a quality whey

a lot of meats especially beef contain high amounts of fats and cholesterol, even a significant amount of trans fats...

these things dont concern me much, but from an arguments standpoint they are points of interest

aside from the fact that whey is a dairy product which is literally squeezed out of cheese...

i dont see why some people are so apposed to it

I heard about the kindeys but not the heart.

Chobby do you know what additives to look out for??

if your concerned i would avoid artificial sweeteners like 'acesulfame K' 'sucralose' or 'splenda' 'aspartame'

Optimum Nutrition makes a 100% natural whey

and im sure there are plenty of other quality "natural" or "organic" whey powders available

Because they are VERY ignorant, and see any supps to do with weight lifting as roids. In the same way they think they should run off their weight, high reps light weight to tone, zero fat diets and my personal favourite, if they were to lift weights for a month they would become HUGE!! and so spend their entire time in the gym on the elliptical.

honestly its based on nothing but rumor. if the products actually include nothing that isnt on the label, they should be fine in moderation. even artificial sweeteners are considered dangerous based on rumor.

I have yet to read anything that suggests that there is such a thing as "too much protein" in a healthy person with no pre-existing kidney disease.

Now if you're on dialysis, sure, you have to watch it.

But let's put some perspective on this - a guy I used to work out with was on dialysis, and he told me a single banana would kill him, because his body can't handle that much potassium all at once.

CLEARLY it's bananas that really cause problems, right? Bananas cause kidney disease!

Same reasoning.

Same rumour mill that drives "Ohnoz, teh proteins will destroy teh kidneeez!!!11!" is apparently behind "artificial sweeteners will kill you".

You know what? Being obese is associated with an increased risk of cancer. Yep, it's true. With obesity, you have more adipose tissue, and with adiposity comes insulin resistance, Type II diabetes risk, heart disease... also more aromatase, and thus more estrogen, which is associated with increased risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Develop any of those diseases and you can only IMAGINE the toxic medicines you'll be living on!

Oh, but that protein powder will kill you, right?

Heh. I'll take my chances with the little bit of splenda in my tea, thanks.

Damn you Built! Now I have to stop adding bananas to my PWO shake.

Obviously bananas and artificial sweetener together is a recipe for early death.

Yep, you bodybuilders, sure, you look healthy NOW, but you're all rotting under those muscular, lean physiques.

<smokes cigarette, drinks scotch, pops heart medication>

i wouldnt go so far as to say that bodybuilding is the healthiest lifestyle

but i would have to agree with you.
its funny how hypocritical society can be...

--drink beer, eat mcdonalds, smoke cigarettes, theres a prescription for any ailment...

but those people over there with their healthy looking physiques must be doing something unnatural to achieve that...

what they do is so dangerous and reckless... their destroying their bodies with that bodybuilding lifestyle....--

Berto I'm not talking about the high protein diets but rather the supplement contents. I suppose drinking 35g of protein through supplements is much healthier than eating 35g worth of protein from beef.

Plus my weight gain shake, from Nutrisport, does not contain any derivatives from GMOs, is aspartame free, and is made in a factory that doesnt make anything else like steroid precursors, hormones, meat products, stimulants or anything banned under the IOC drugs testing rules. The only things it contains are dairy and a bit of pea fibre. Plus it has studies backing the use of carbohydrates & protein pwo so it looks pretty trustable :)

No. Your kidneys and liver may fall out any day now, but your heart is fine!

I would say if you developed heart problems you've probably had them long before you started supplementing with extra protein and just never knew it.

I'm not so sure about that. Beef's got a lot more nutrients in it than a protein shake.

I love beef. Mmmm...

Your shake is fine.

Word to the wise, though - don't look to the company selling a product for proof of its efficacy. PubMed Home - it's one of your tools as a bodybuilder.

It's true. My liver is just about kakked, and I'm on dialysis, but my ticker has never been better since I started mainlining whey protein.

Oh, time to go for my cardio...

<snorts rail of creatine>

They're all steraloids in my book....:finger:

What's the difference then? Protein shakes are food. They're derived from food, and they can be used as food (although it's not recommended as they don't have the nutrients of real food).
