My mum wanted to take this class at the local gym called Curves.
From what I can gather it's just circuit training with no diet entailed. Pretty much these guys who run the class don't care if the women get in shape as long as their bank accounts are full. I told my mum I would help her with a program so she wouldn't have to pay for the help.

Now my question to you is, can you help me design something?

Just a few stats.
She is 170lbs, not very athletic, can't do many exercises that would put strain on her neck(car accident).

Her goals are to lose about 20-30 pounds, and put on a little muscle so she can go back out to the beach.

I want to help her, but I don't want to mess her body up like I did mine. Please, any help would be much appreciated. My mum and I thank you in advance :D cheers!

Either get her to join here herself, or print off the stickies for her, or tell her to find a reputable trainer.

Under absolutely no circumstances are you to give her advice yourself.

Let her join. They would know the best for her personally cos they can communicate and see each other directly, watch her performance and results etc.

Don't attempt it yourself mate you might end up killin her no offense

There are worse places to start than Curves.

Ouiswim, how old is your mom? Because she weighs what I did when I started (back in 2001).

Man I really laughed out loud. Sorry Q but he's right!

I agree. Many women need the motivational benefits of working out with others on the same schedule.
Tell her if she does sign up to carefully read the fine print. Many will be saddling her with a contractual commitment that requires three years of monthly payments which would cost way more than a local gym membership.
Take her around to local gyms and explain the benefits of getting more "bang for the buck" since most gyms offer more than just a few cheap circuit training machines when she advances past their limitations. Allot of them don't require lengthy contractual commitments.

Haha, thanks everyone. My mom read the posts you guys left, and decided she would rather listen to pros than her own son. :pissed: good choice on her part haha.
I'll have her make her own account, thats a good idea.

Built: She is 35. I'll have her make her account tonight and give you all the nitty gritty info though. Thanks!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. :loser:
Haha.

Ouiswim, you're a good sport.

Have your mom drop me a line when she joins.

Will do, very much appreciated Built. :thumb:

Curves....OMG. For some it has worked, but i have horror stories galore.
I had one client that was a curves believer. She told me that i wasnt training her the way she did at curves, and i was kind enough to give her money back and said..Please, go back to curves then. to date, she still weighs in the 250-260 range...way to go curves..:geewhiz:

Okay, Tank LOL - that's her diet, not Curves. You should know better than anyone you really can't exercise off the weight. I always remind my friends that. I tell them to pretend exercise burns exactly NOTHING. Once they get their minds around that, it changes the type and duration of exercise they do.

Oh didnt mention the diet thing...after working out one day she said she was gonna go home and make chic/broc...
As i drove through McDonalds to grab a small coffee, guess who was by a window seat whoofin down a BigMac...:geewhiz:

Poor thing. She's got a real problem.

Curves wasn't her problem. She's got an addiction.

Yes, she had alot going on, But, when given the tools, you can build something great out of it.
When I asked her what kind of tree she would be, she said willow tree.
Its a sign of weakness.
I hated Psychology class, but some things proved usable. And that was a loooong time ago..

I want to be an ash or maple.... what does that mean :D

it was a test to see what type of personality you had/have.
An oak means strong willed,
Willow means wishy washy weak.
I'll do through my books, and see if i can find that chapter, It was interesting to say the least.

If i recall, strong yet flexible to a point, meaning you will compromise through communication yet not just to give in due to conflict ....Sheesh, somethings I can remember..Alright..I'm getting a headache.
Did that match you to point Iain?

And this is from your sig beloew..
Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.
That was part of the chapter as well.
Personallity Traits... or something like that.

Oak or Redwood for the win! I love these type of questions.

Ahh, come on guys, i'm old, cant think of all this college stuff.
But this training so to speak holds true.
I trained several sheriff's deputies this year, and a couple of the ?'s they were asked were the tree one and even the ..what would you do if came across a wide slow moving river, a wide rushing river etc..Any hoo, I'm a weight lifter, and thats all i got to say about that!

You guys had some crazy shit in your psych course, bud! I'm not a fan of this kind of "latent variable" psychometric crap. Sounds like you kinda rolled your eyes through it too - can't say I blamed you.

For those of you just tuning in now, a latent variable is a thing we aren't actually sure exists, but we go ahead and figure out how to measure it anyway.

An example everyone has probably heard of is "IQ" - the intelligence quotient, which is supposed to be a measure of your intelligence, but that's assuming intelligence is one thing. So we assume there's a thing called intelligence, we assume it is one thing, we devise a whole pile of tests that measure stuff that we presume is associated with this thing called intelligence that we assume exists and then we score the test.

Yeah, I know. Spinning webs in the air.

I did my minor in Psychology, with some graduate work in Psychometrics, and honestly, I think it's all bunk.

("OH, MariAnne, don't hold back, tell us what you REALLY think...")

LMAO!

A friend of mine, who is a trainer said he had a similar situation with a client.
had her on a diet plan and trained her...
she came to him after a time complaining that she was spending all the $$ with no results.
long story short...he asked her where her car was.
"What? ....why do you want to know that?"
she led him to the car where he found lots of candy bar wrappers.

Well back to the topic, I decided to have her try a Keto diet, I'm going to do it with her. I'll have her post her results. We started today and it's going strong. Wish us luck!

Describe your keto diet, ouiswim.

I'll have to do it in the morning, I'm about to go to bed *yawn*
Night.
