How is it, a guy can put up decent amount of weight on various exercises & two days later pull a muscle in his back picking up a shoe off the Fing floor? I've been almost bed bound (w/no sleep) since yesterday evening, with what seems to be a pulled lat muscle!!!!! I can't even barely breathe & will probably have to stay out of the gym for awhile.

Sorry about the rant, it just pisses me off & makes no sense!!! Panties are in a complete bunch, can I get a hug or something?

Hell i remember getting a new PR on deads, and a few sets of rack deads. It seemed like the whole gym stopped to watch, and I felt like the coolest guy on the planet. What happened? I racked all the plates after being done, bent over and put my shoes on( I dead shoeless) and as I bent over for my jug of water, I hit a nerve in the lower back.

My ass was on the floor for about 15 minutes and out of the gym for a week.
Crazy shit, but it happens to every lifter.

that happens to me..but only happens to my upper trapz, all the time. I dont know why. the top of my shoulders can feel lose and then all of the sudden something like putting a purse on or picking up something like and accidently shrugging my shoulders will put fire on my upper trap/top of shoulder muscles. sometimes my rhomboids act up too and back of neck, or middle back when sitting at the computer too long in 1 position or at all period.

all I could do is massage myself with a roller or lacrosse ball or whatever, and the knott just comes right back. it seems like everything just comes and goes away on its own, which is very weird. I am guessing all of this may have to do with imbalances with your lats either not flexible enough, not stable enough, too flexible...or my upper trapz being overactive and low trapz need to be strengthen, etc. the cause could be tons of things. my TFL and piriformis is the same way. and my low back when I sleep wrong (have a knott in my QL muscle that is noticable when moving around after sleeping wrong). I can massage all I want, but it all goes away on its own.

it is very weird how the muscle system works.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who's run into an issue like this. I think it pisses me off more than anything. I called the Doc on it & of course all he wanted to do is cut me a script for narcotic pain killers (site unseen!!). Which I refuse to take as they make me 100% lethargic. It's no wonder why people get hooked on pain killers, when their handed out like candy!!!

That sucks man.

What is your stretching routine like, do you do any soft tissue work like foam rolling/massage?

Injuries like that may be ones that develop over months and months. The work in the gym may not have triggered the injury, but it may have been a promoting factor, or the promoting factor.

I'm also reminded of a great weight lifting quote, "Treat all weight like it is heavy". Meaning, don't let your guard down.

Now with picking up a shoe, that doesn't really apply. But it is important to remember.

Not necessarily, you want to figure out the problem before you go jamming elbows into it. Doing that could make it worse.

Last year I woke up and my lower back was in so much pain I couldn't even put on socks. I ended up going to the doc after a week, and it turns out my piriformis (sp?) muscle was swollen and was squeezing my sciatic nerve. I started to do Bikram Hot yoga and it cleared up in two weeks. Stretching is good, but yoga takes it to another level for me.

I stretch on workout days, but could stand to do a little more on off days.

Think of it like a person getting into a car accident and feeling fine , no pain, no pulls the moment after the accident, and then waking up a day or two later completely in pain. You probably pulled a tendon, the same time as your back workout. Lactic acid was not released thus blocking your pain sensors. Ive done the exact same thing on my tricep flexor and back as well. it sucks! I would, Ice, heat, ice, heat rotation. Im almost positive you probably have a quarter size knot in the place of the exact pain?????

both of those cost money..the free way is finding out your imbalances, stretching what is strong, strengthen what is weak, self-massage with foam roller or lacrosse ball what is tight. if that doesnt work..than the next thing would be a good chiropractor that does upper and lower body (not just upper because the upper and lower body is connected..pain in one area can be from pain in another area), and then a doctor. If you know something is torn, go to a doctor asap (not chiro)

People should understand the difference between a knott (trigger point), a pull, torn, and know about where your nerves are before seeing a chiropractor or spending their money on a MRI or anything. It might be just a simple knott in a muscle causing a trigger point in another area. Before massaging for sure, you need to know where your nerves are so you won;t hit a nerve. Once you hit a nerve, it can weaken. I have done that before trying to massage my triceps and thought it was just achy knotts, but it was a nerve I was on (wasnt massaging the right spot with my roller) and it did weaken my forearm, had to do forearm curls to strengthen it back up like my other side. One thing you dont want to do is hit a nerve.

I had a badassss leg day... went home, had sex and during the act pulled a hammy. no happy ending here

If you can afford it, check out a Bikram Yoga studio in your area. First, its a killer workout, second it will help with flexibility, breathing, blood circulation 3rd in bikram the room is like 100 degrees so you sweat out all those toxins 4th- Girls! Tons of beautiful, half naked, athletic, sexy women :ohyeah:

A good chiro is going to do his due dilligence (x-rays, P&H, etc.).

sorry to hear that flathead. hope u get better soon.i was talking on the phone and my bicep got something wrong but it healed in 2 days. trained through it. wow , just take it easy for a few days stuff like that dont last long in most cases. except gears hes got a disc problem, my advice gears dont platy with back surgery. it can fuck u up permently, to where you wont walk but with cane. but its your call. my friend has 3 slipped discs he trains through it because he nos the horror stories . dr will tell you oh, no problem will fix it then while there listening to music in operating room slip and the drill clips a spinal nerve.

Staying healthy costs money. Getting healthy after being ill/hurt generally costs more. Stretching, et.al. is very good of course, but if he is hurt and goes about trying to fix himself as a layman, he could make things worse (as you mention). He might stretch today and wake up tomorrow unable to get out of bed.

With a new acute injury, perhaps it is best left to professionals? Depending on how severe he thinks his injury is, should determine his course of action. A chiro will generally do limited x-rays for free (or his ins. may cover them), and it usually doesn't cost much to see them. Personally, I am a fan of DO's - almost as much musculoskeletal training as chiros and some will even do chiropractic adjustments.

There are also Medical offices that have MD/DO, chiros and PT combined under one roof. They will take a more thorough battery of images because they can bill it under the MD/DO and insurance will pick up the tab (chiros have a hard time getting reimbursed for anything but a very few simple x-ray exams).

Also, all nerves stem from the spinal cord which is housed in the vertebral column. A misalignment can cause compression of a spinal nerve at the IVF. That could result in any number of issues from numbness, to loss of motor function, to issues with organs, etc. Everything is controlled by the brain and the brain sends info via the spinal cord to those nerves to everything in our bodies.

Hope I didn't hit a nerve! :D

How's your stretching routine? Absent?

My stretching routine is pretty solid on workout days, but could stand to do a little more on off days

Thanks bro, I'm going to see how things shake out by this Friday & go from there. I've now missed two workouts due to this BS!!

Right on to everyone & their input!! Appriciate the feedback.

I'm sure this muscle pull or whatever it is, stems form last Saturday where I was doing a Max Effort day on deads. It just amazes me how it took two days before becoming an issue. Oh well, we'll call it the cost of doing business.

True, but I'm not sure a chiropractor is the answer. X-rays aren't going to indicate much about muscular injury. Chiros deal more with issues that derive from the spine.

I don't think that is the direction to follow.

I think Flathead would be better suited dealing with some sort of physical therapist/LMT that works with athletes. But any of the above would probably work if they were skilled pros.

But shit like this happens to weight lifters, it might not be that big of a deal. Re-occurrence of injury or chronic pain means you'll want to get it checked out by a professional.

Some people do everything right. They warm up extensively, stretch, pay attention to proper form and get soft tissue work done, and they will eventually still get caught with something if they train long enough.

Irritated my sciatic nerve doing 220lbs warmup set a week after pulling 400lbs. Had to stop deadlifting for a fortnight. Couldn't sit still for more than 20 minutes for that whole fortnight.

Irony is a cunt.

You're not alone Flathead, fate hates all of us :P

Hope it gets better soon, big guy!

No one can take you serious when you use terms like "Fortnight" Gaz. I forget the Welsh slang you taught me, but I would so be using it right now.

You guys are just jealous of my epic vocabulary.

I could even the playing field & start speaking some redneck. But the problem there is, that would just consist of me misspelling a bunch of words & look dumber than I already am.

I was doing db shrugs and tried to stifle a sneeze(which in hindsight wasn't such a good idea)it took 3 trips to the chiropractor to get straightened out.

Update: I finally got a decent night sleep last night & didn't have to take any pain killers. Very minimal discomfort this morning, I'm even contemplating going to the gym tomorrow morning? < Obviously I'll be easing my way back in, I'll probably do a light weight full body routine, to make up for the week I've lost. I appricate everyone's input.
