I recently started taking interest in getting in shape about 2 months ago.. i've mostly did body weight exercises and anything i could do with dumbbells and so far managed to drop 25 pounds.. but now I want to focus on building muscle and push ups and pull ups by themselves just arent cutting it.. now here's my question.. I live in a rural area and its 45 minutes one way to the nearest gym so thats not an option, i do however have a decent space at home to make my own gym. what equipment should i get to start out with weight lifting? as ive said i have the dumbells and i know i need a bench press, what else? i dont want to go super expensive but at the same time i wanna get bigger lol.

15 years ago, i bought a combo pullup/dip bar. 8' tall..100 bucks. probably 200 now.
great investment. great exercises.

a squat rack, can double as your bench station as well (you will just need to add the bench) get one with a pull up bar on top. you can use a couple chairs as a dip station, then a bar bell and of course some weights.

Power rack first and foremost.

Deadlifting platform of some sort, i.e rubber mat that can handle heavy weights being dropped in it.

bench press is nice.

utility bench is a good if you have the room.

dumbbells starting with 5lbs to 100lbs in 5lb increments. or a set of power blocks. this will be the most expensive piece.

500lbs of olympic weights.

This is pretty much what I have. took me several years to acquire all of it. Craigslist is an excellent place to look.

My home gym is my hobby so I don't mind spending some money on it. Plus exercise equipment holds it's value. As long as you buy it used:)

I have the below that's listed on a local forum in NY/NJ. Hit me up if interested.

Exercise Bench and 360 lbs of weights. This is not the flimsy kind that you buy at Modells. This is hardcore and very sturdy. Bought this at Dicks Sporting goods 3 years ago. It includes the bench, the weights listed below, the olympic size barbel (45 lbs) and dumbells, Olympic size Curl Bar (35 lbs), and the weight racks to hold the weights. I spent well over $600 for everything. Asking $200. Pick up only.

Weights includes:
4x 45 lbs
2x 35 lbs
2x 25 lbs
4x 10 lbs
4x 5 lbs

A squat rack and a bench would be the first things I'd make sure I had.

A barbell, a good set of bumper plates, and maybe a set of squat stands for back squats. That's about all I'd need.

Stepaukas, that pullup/dip bar sounds interesting too.

yeah i was already interested in a power rack as well for squats didnt think about getting one with a pull up bar on the top.. although i have a pullup bar already. i have a set of powerblock dumbbells. also x factor.. i'd be very interested in that bench as its a pretty good buy.. however would be a long drive for me to come get it from arkansas lol. also.. didnt think about looking on craigslist either.. not a bad idea at all.. thanks guys

Decent rack, good quality utility bench(troy makes a good FID bench, that is inexpensive, a good bar(texas power bar) LB baker at Irondawg.com has the best price on them, and 500lbs of free weight-as said above, also a platform can be made cheaply, 4-3/4 inch sheets of plywood, and if you want to add rubber to the outsides and add a 3rd sheet centered. If you dont want to spend the money on plywood, hit up a Tractor supply store or orschelns and grab some stall mats.

I would just get a bench and several increments of dumb bells. You can do lots of things with that.

^^this plus a barbell within another couple of months.

You could do cleans and then squat but it may damage the flooring if it dropped.

yeah i got it all together now.. started my routine yesterday
