Hey guys,
Is going for a 1 rep max beneficial at all? i hear guys talk about it all the time, but I stick to doing my sets and reps and increasing weight periodically, I'm seeing gains in size and strength. Is it just for bragging rights, or does it serve some purpose?

No. Totally not necessary, and done too often can be very draining. Unless you set up your program incredibly intelligently like Westside for instance, its a shortcut to overtraining and injury.

Do it every 6 months or so if you like, but theres no reason to do it regularly.

Its a tool for helping you figure out how many reps you should be doing and what weight you should be doing them at. In powerlifting its different I think but youll have to get a powerlifters info on that.

if you're not a competitive bencher/powerlifter and you don't need a one rep max for college/pro sports testing, then a one rep max is about as worthless as measuring your weiner.....nobody cares

the local gym i go to most peoples claimed 1 rep max is usualy 25% more than they can ATCUALY lift,or 9/10 times if they can use the claimed weight you can guarentee the lift wont be with full motion or good form.

thanks for the feedback guys, yeah i have no reason to care about it im more concerned with my progress on my bench as it relates to my workout.

Even competitive powerlifters don't do 1RM too often. Usually right before contest time, and maybe a handful of times throughout the year. Puts a lot of strain on the body, and increases the possibility of injury.

I haven't maxed out since college...it just isn't beneficial. Dudes talk about it because they are trying to make up for their small penis.

Well how can you answer the all important question "How much can you bench?"?

We use it all the time in powerlifting.. at least "our team" does, but we gear a whole routine around it. We dont just walk in and see what our 1 rep max is for the day. We use the Westside "max effort" and "speed" approach.
