Just trying to get people's opinions on the deadlift.

By deadlift i mean conventional deadlift or sumo i guess.

Personally I have found it a jack of all trades that I cannot in its pure form place into a workout where i feel it is either delivering its full benefits or not hindering a following workout and in terms of results I have numerous better exercises for the bodyparts worked;
lower back-rack pulls, hyperextenions, good mornings
hams-romanians on a box, reverse leg curl
hips-glute bridges/low box squats, pull throughs
upper back-rows especially t-bars and bent over rows
core stabilisation -heavy squats.

Now I am probably in the minority here but would like to get a general feel for the views of this board. :hiya:

Rack pulls work the upper portion of the back. I feel like deadlifts are about tied with squats. I would probably choose squats if I had to for leg development. I don't think deadlifts are something to be replaced with isolation exercises or even another compound unless you have an injury or something. It's probably my favorite lift to preform.

You are not alone. I felt the same way in the beginning. I've never done deadlift on a regular basis until a few months ago. After getting the form down and after doing them for a while, now I am convinced it IS the second best exercise, if not even with squat.

deadlifts are some core building movements, possible the best core building exercise for me. Love em. Along with front squats, this ole boy is getting ripped and big because of the deadlift, on back day of course.....

For beginners interested in powerlifting and/or bodybuilding, the major lifts do a great job building up a 'base'. Both with size and with strength.

At a certain point, other accessory movements are necessary to bring up particular muscles. Those accessory movements can be catered towards assisting strength gains in the major lifts or facilitating hypertrophy (or both), depending on what the lifter is looking for.

One can elicit hypertrophy much more effectively if one has high overall strength. All those higher rep bodybuilding movements are much more effective if one is strong enough to use 100 pounds at 10 reps compared to 50 pounds at 10 reps.

If one wants to powerlift and hit big numbers, training and building the major lifts is going to be a major part of the regimen.

sumo deads 1 day

squats 3-7 days later lol

cant do regular deadlifts. they kill me

Yeah just not my strong point, i like to use the tall guy excuse even if some dont believe its a decent excuse. But i stick with them and continue to try and improve.

Haha, fair enough

The "tall guy excuse" really doesn't work. Being tall is actually an advantage, Google it.

I was on about squats not deads, i dont know if thats what your on about too. Anyway i dont wont to get into that arguement again, I shouldnt have brought it up lol!
I see where trapzilla is coming from for where to put deads though. I have them at the start of my back day and it definately effects my rows which i subsequently do. However, i couldnt do it last as would be too tired and doesnt work for me on a leg day as squats are tough enough, without having deads on the same day.

OH BRAINFART!!! I was on deads. Yeah I suck at squats right now cause I'm tall too :) Long legs make a big squat hard.

But rmember, in the future, when we get fucking huge, tall legs can hold more muscle:)

Best exercise. By the way, deadlifts do not have to be done on back day. You can do them with legs or separately. You can dedicate a day to deadlifting and related pulling movements. I like to pull and squat on separate days, so I have a day for each.

I purchased some straps today. Im hoping they help me increase my DL. Wont use them all the time, just when im going heaviest.

Anyone find they help?

They only help if your grip isn't strong enough to hold the bar.

I like to use them, helps cushioon the bar, i just started lifting again about 2 months ago and am doing deads @ 275 I didn't start using my straps until I got up to 275.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, my grip was giving out when going heavy.

i love deads...one of my favorite exercises!! it may not be the best exercise for developing any one body part, that i really don't know? but i do think it is the best test of over all strength!!

love it too but i don't do it that much because of a old back injury...

anyway, this helps me building a strong core.

chalk and hate brother

I need to seriously do deadlifting.
All these days I was after the Power Clean now I am after Squat Clean.

Squat Clean requires that I start much lower in deadlift position. A bit late to realize the strength building benefits of the 'DEADLIFT'.

You aren't lifting weights if you don't deadlift bud.... Its great, try it, you'll like it. It will wipe your ass out!

You'll probably find the deadlift easier to place if you base your routine around movement patterns, not body parts.

i.e. ham dominant - deads, GM's and hypers.
quad accessory - hack squat

By training this way I feel that each body part gets his twice per week, once directly and once indirectly.

used to train that way, but it didn't sit right with me.
One thing I have discoverd though is that i can do deads on a back day providing i don't go to the floor on each rep i.e. keep the bar just below knees-ala dorian

why can't you go all the way to the floor with each rep?
