I'm not trying to be a dick here, but why don't you get a job? You act like you are incapable of paying rent and bills.
Too late:roflmao:

Totally agree, especially if I know it's a student.

Spot-on post, sox. Spot-on.

The rant is nonsense, but the message is clear.

Tip like your supposed to.

And P.S. soxmuscle,

I do get the impression that you have writing talent. Even though this is a casual forum, you've got the knack.

You noted you were into poetry.

I hope you are still working on poetry (and/or writing) if it interests you.

I was just playing about the poetry. I can understand why a good looking kid gets the hottest chick at the bar, but that doesn't mean I like it - same goes for poetry, I can recognize good poetry, but it doesn't do much for me... like pets.

I get what he means but I have a job and work a shit ton, and I have never made $500 dollars in a month.
news flash get a new job:coffee:

Last year, when these money issues first came about, I did everything to find a job and was left to choose between being the Orange Chicken guy at Panda Express or doing what I'm doing now, which is a decent gig if I would just have a "good day" and not the bad days I've been having of late.

One of the restaurants that I applied to as a waiter... one of the young kids basically took me aside on my way out of the sit-down meeting with the manager/owner and told me "if you don't have a set of tits, you're not going to be hired." I tend to think it was my lack of serving experience which made me ineligible for the gig, but every time I go to that restaurant, I'm not shocked to see that every waitress is super hot.

That seems to be the story around here, and I can't say I blame these restaurant owners for thinking that way.

I know me and my friends have persuaded ourselves to stay and get some more drinks than we originally had planned because our waitress was hot and we were flirting with her.

it's pretty much always been that way when it comes to being a waiter/waitress. My sister is 2 years older than me and in HS she used to waitress on the wknds she was very busty had the typical "dancers" body @ 5'10 as she took ballet, tap, jazz, etc. for her whole life. she used to bring home $500 a shift and this was back in the mid 80's.

Not entirely. I worked the banquet room at a very popular Italian restaurant, and we had to carry the food and drinks on large serving trays over our shoulder. Trays ofter weighed fifty pounds or more filled. All guys. Any table over eight had 15% gratuity added automatically to the ticket. We often got tipped on top of that. Believe me, we worked our asses off, and the manager did not let us write down tickets in front of the customer, so memorization was crucial. Service was formal, and any mistakes were dealt with swiftly. Very tough job, but the pay was very good.

It gets a hell of a lot tougher after you graduate. My advice to you is to learn how to make money and support yourself now. My situation forced me to provide for myself during my university years. It was scary and tough. I did the restaurant thing for about 6 months or so before realizing that I would never clear more than $800.00 a month even if I worked full time. I had a major case of culture shock and anxiety over trying to be a 17 year old adult.

I'm sure it's this way at every restaurant.

If I owned a restaurant, cup size and body dimensions would be mandatory on the application. And males wouldn't even be considered for the job.

PS: The names Justin, put it in the good word with your sister.

I hear ya, man.

I've always tried to please everybody, putting other people ahead of myself, but it's getting to the point that financially, I just can't do that any more.

Last night, my buddies all tried to convince me to go out drinking, and I stayed home, smoked a blunt, wrote that pet rant, listened to Howard, watched baseball and fell asleep, and I couldn't have been happier. Meanwhile, my friends all didn't wake up until 1, spent $50-$100 dollars on unsuccessfully trying to get into the pants of drunk females, missed all their classes, and pretty much felt like shit all day.

I'm still an immature fuck, but I grew up more over the last year than I had at any other point in my life.

What do you do for a living now?

Sorry, I was bypassing the small talk and heading straight into the bedroom. Put in the good word is what I meant.

If it were my sister somebody was joking about, it would be this emoticon :shooter:. Hopefully, LAM takes it easy on me with the paddle:

This is very good. It's a little long, so you can break up your viewing if you want. It's very good and viewer friendly.

it's not just you there are many of us out there. I spend 10x more money on my friends than I do on myself. I derive far more pleasure out of the process of earning and making money then I do spending it on "things".

in this day and age except for those that don't work on wallstreet money does not come easy as and with the attack on social protections you have to protect yourself financially.

--Surging college costs price out middle class

By Annalyn Censky @CNNMoney June 13, 2011
As portrayed on the left axis, median income has hovered around $33,000 since 1988. Meanwhile, college tuition and fees -- portrayed on the right axis -- have more than doubled.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- What do you get when college costs skyrocket but incomes barely budge? Yet another blow to the middle class.

"As the out-of-pocket costs of a college education go up faster than incomes, it's pricing low and medium income families out of a college education," said Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of financial aid sites FinAid.org and FastWeb.com.

The numbers confirm what most middle class families already know -- college is becoming so expensive, it's starting to hold them back.

The crux of the problem: Tuition and fees at public universities, according to the College Board, have surged almost 130% over the last 20 years -- while middle class incomes have stagnated.

Is it worth the costs? Absolutely not. I believe education is one of the best things you can give yourself, I am not too sure that college is the way to go. I don't currently work directly in the field I work in, and most of the stuff I learned that make me successful were things I picked up way after college. Sure, I believe the psychology stuff helped out as one of the biggest skills most people don't have these days are people skills. Was it worth $60k in debt? Absolutely not, it was fun but it didn't make me better at doing what I do.

It's funny, after riding a desk for 6 years I bailed and decided to work for myself. I left the rat race in 2006 and I don't miss it at all. I have friends who are engineers who were transferred out of the area to places I would never care to live who are making about 5% more than they were 5 years ago and working 50% more hours. No thank you.

I feel the same way.

Yes, Psychology is very important; dealing with people is very important.

60K? No.

20K? No.

5K? No.

It should not be this much. We can educate ourselves in this age...we must be disciplined, but we must do it.

IMO there could easily be some type of degree/internship program worked out with big business where a kid goes to school 6-8 hrs a day for a year taking pertinent core classes (not say 3 maths and 3 sciences plus fucking capstones and electives), then said student goes to the big business for say a year for OJT in a particular field/area of study.

After that year the kid goes back to school for another year of 6-8 hrs a day of classes in that field. If the student goes back to that same business and works x-years, that big business could pay all or part of that students 2 years of college. The kid is getting real world OJT and building a resume with both education and work experience, while the business gets the kid cheap for a year while evaluating him as a potential new hire out of college. Not to mention 4-5 yrs of school turns into 18-24 months of study.

In my field there was not way I could have been an analytical chemist with highschool degree. The advanced placement chemistry is a joke. So a college degree minimum is a necessity. No way could I have taught myself the thermodynamic equations used to figure out best control conditions for an reaction using a certain reagent or enzyme in a certain setting blah blah blah. Luckily I got a full scholarship in college. I still had to work to pay for food and some amenities. My brother went to Princeton on a full scholarship. Emory will give you a full ride to college if your family makes less than 100 grand a year. The Iveys will give you a free ride if your family makes less than 80 grand I believe. ( but you have to meet admission criteria). It was actually cheaper for me to go to an Ivey medical school since they subsidized me more than a state school ( SUNY) in New York where I would have borrowed and with interest owed more than going to an overpriced Ivey. A lot of people don't know this. Now if you want to be an engineer, go to Georgia Tech ( ranked 5th) in the nation and pay 8 grand a year vs. MIT which though ranked first is 48 grand a year. In the long run a Georgia Techie is no worse off than M.I.T. techie......

I don't think you necessarily need a PHD in chemistry to good research work, the female chemist who invented Kevlar while working at Dupont only had a B.S. stephanie kowlton. However, in this age it is hard getting grants without it. Just like my MD helps me get research grants.

I have a job, which makes me luckier than most recent college grads. However, 30% of my income goes toward paying back my student loans, which puts me at just above minimum wage. And then I see someone who just started working straight out of high school making more than me because they've been in the workforce for the five years I was studying. It evens out, but I kind of thought having a college degree was going to open more doors, instead of just different doors.

This shit hits home with me. I'm 22 and trying to finish my degree in Env. Science. My goal was to get out of school without any debt. I started and dicked around because I didn't know what I wanted to do so I got an AA in Drafting and Design. I've been working at an engineering firm for 4 years now. Right now I'm full time. During school I still have to maintain 30hrs a week to retain my full time benifits (Bonuses, Insurance, etc..). The problem is I'm not trying to drag out my education. Luckily I can take one online class this semester to let me work more and maintain full time status but I will not be able to do that as I go into my upper level classes.

I have about 60 hours +- left on my degree so I'm about halfway there. I already have enough money to pay for tuition for next semester. I plan to stack enough money this summer to try and pay for the rest of my college education (I'm thinking about $12k). Granted this is just tuition though.

My problem is this. I really want to get this done as soon as possible. If I take 12hrs per semester there's no way I can juggle school and work full time. Another problem is logistics. Work and home is 45min away from school so that eats up some time right there.

I'm not really sure what I want to do. I'm going to need money to live on but at the same time deep down I really want to quit work, go full time at school and knock it out. College life isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Go every other semester then? Yes it will take longer but if you already have a good job, who cares at this point?

I worked every other semester my last two years of school. When in school I worked 3 days a week while taking classes 2 days a week and this allowed me to pay as I went for my bachelors.

Shit i'm not trying to be a lifer at college. I really want to crank it out ASAP. I'll be stuck in my current position at work until I come up with a degree. It's not bad pay $14/hr, but it's not enough to really live on and I can do better.

I see your point but my idea of a lifer is someone who fucks around and does nothing but go to school. Taking a semester off to work FT is pretty productive and adds to the resume and the checking account

Good luck! :winkfinger:

definitely not anymore. once wages became stagnant and US schools turned into for profit institutions is when a lot of degrees became "worthless"...I have many Dr friends that are even struggling with college loan debt.

NCAA brackets should not be based on tuition either...this is also a major influence

So I have 36 hours left to complete my B.S. in mathmatics.
Go for it? or Drop it?

Also, I have 12k debt right now, a FT job @ 11$/hr.
My mom has about 11k debt for Parent plus loans.

I really want to finish because i'm so bored with life as is.

You must be kidding.

Of course you should finish. A B.S. in Mathematics is a good field.

You gotta be joking.

Your debt is nothing.

At this point finish even if you get another degree later. A degree is a degree for many jobs, meaning it gets you that first job and experience gets you the jobs after that.

Yeah finish for sure!
