Protein shouldn't be used for fuel, carbs fuel your workouts.
So, some carbs before your workout to provide fuel, and some carbs afterwards to replenish glycogen (stored carbs), is optimal.
By eating enough carbs, you prevent protein from being used as fuel.

so what would be proper carb intake for pre-work out?or is there a good shake for that??gnc lean shake any good ?

Real food is always better. I like 20-40 grams pre and post. Oats, fruit, whole grain bread are good examples.

I like protein and carbs pre workout. Ex88 is correct though, glycogen is important to restore post training. I use white potato and steak for my post. Drink 30 grams of complex carb mix when driving home to avoid going catabolic

All the advice these guys are giving is dead on! I have been eating a cup of oatmeal on my high carb days about an hour and a half before I train. My workouts are leaps and bounds better than my lower carb days. Most guys are so concerned about protein thats all they focus on. If your dieting high protein diets are great. When putting on mass carbs in my opinion are just as important as protein. Maybe even more important. Not enough carbs in your diet equals not enough fuel for growth! Good luck bro.

well right now my main focus is dropping weight before i gear up,i would like to drop 30-40 pounds by august but doing it the right way,i just dont want my body to plateau as they say and really looking for that right balance...for me right now its all about cutting weight

Thats quite a bit of weight to drop by august. You can do it, but will be loosing muscle as well. But as they said above, you need some carbs pre workout for fuel. I usually stick to oats just because they are cheap and easy. Even when cutting I still put carbs in my post workout shake, just not as much as I would when im bulking. about 20g dextrose or so when cutting. 40g on leg and back day. 60-80g everyday in the offseason!

okay, thats the conclusion i am coming too...just dont over do the carbs..i am gonna buy some oatmeal for pre-work out carbs...
