( General Mills) "if everyone in the US started eating healthfully, it would cost us $503 billion per year! That might affect our ability to pay CEOs like General Mills? Ken Powell annual compensations of more than $12 million."

Dear American Consumers: Please Don

Dear Consumers: A disturbing trend has come to our attention. You, the people, are thinking more about health, and you're starting to do something about it. This cannot continue.

Sure, theres always been talk of health in America. We often encourage it. The thing is, we only want you to think about and talk about health in a certain way?equating health with how you look, instead of outcomes like quality of life and reduced disease risk. Your superficial understanding of health has a great influence over your purchasing decisions, and we?re ready for it, whether you choose to go low-calorie, low-fat, gluten-free or inevitably give up and accept the fact that you cant resist our Little Debbie snacks, potato chips and ice cream novelties.

Whatever the current health trend, we respond by developing and marketing new products. We can also show you how great some of our current products are and always have been. For example, when things were not looking so good for fat, our friends at Welch?s were able to point out that their chewy fruit snacks were a fat free option. Low fat! Healthy! Then the tide turned against carbohydrates. Our friends in meat and dairy were happy to show that their steaks, meats and cheeses were low-carb choices. Low carbs! Healthy!

But we?re getting uneasy.

In 2009, Congress commissioned the Inter-agency Working Group (IWG) to develop standards for advertising foods to children. The IWG included the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Congress identified these organizations as having expertise and experience in child nutrition, child health, psychology, education, marketing and other fields relevant to food and beverage marketing and child nutrition standards.

We were dismayed when the IWG released its report in 2011. The guidelines said that foods advertised to children must provide a meaningful contribution to a healthful diet. For example, any food marketed to children must contain at least 50% by weight one or more of the following: fruit; vegetable; whole grain; fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt; fish; extra lean meat or poultry; eggs; nuts and seeds; or beans.
This report was potentially devastating. These organizations, experts in nutrition, were officially outlining what constituted a meaningful contribution to a healthful diet.? Thankfully, we have a ton of money and were able to use it to get the IWG to withdraw the guidelines.

In a public comment posted on the FTC website, our friends at General Mills pointed out that under the IWG guidelines, the most commonly consumed foods in the US would be considered unhealthy. Specifically, according to General Mills, of the 100 most commonly consumed foods and beverages in America, 88 would fail the IWGs proposed standards. So you see? If you people start eating the way the nutrition experts at the CDC and USDA recommend that you eat, that would delegitimize almost 90 percent of the products we produce! Do you realize how much money that would cost us?
According to the General Mills letter, if everyone in the US started eating healthfully, it would cost us $503 billion per year! That might affect our ability to pay CEOs like General Mills Ken Powell annual compensations of more than $12 million.

Yet another reason to get corporate lobbyists out.

Walk down to the local Walmart, or anywhere for that matter, and you will realize that there is little chance of a large majority of the public eating healthy anytime soon.

there is hardly any "real food" in the standard US supermarket. it's all highly processed food stuff and junk, nothing except garbage foods that do nothing except decrease the health status.

fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, jams and jellies, honey, cheeses, eggs, meat, fish, and flowers.

almost every community probably has them.

We should be using animal and human poops for fertilizers instead of chemicals. I think they are lot safer and better than chemicals. Economically it is also better because poops are free, while chemicals are not.

Aerable land is running out and not sure if you're talking about the Ogallala aquifer or not but it's being depleted as well. Mostly for farming irrigation.

People can volunteer to poop in the farms for the farmers for free.:D

Time to build yourself an aquaponics set-up its easy, we just built one here at our company for $600, already has half sized heads of lettuce after a couple weeks. The talapia inside the tank help to fertilize it. It has 84 rows of romaine lettuce, chives, and spinach growing on it.

I'll post a pic later...

People aren't going to change their eating habits regardless. As easy as it is to point the finger at the food industry, they are a big part of it, there is plenty of blame to go around. Parents don't make home cooked meals anymore and kids shouldn't be babysat by the television anyway. It also may be a good idea to educate your child about what healthy food is, and the problem is most people would first have to learn what healthy food is themselves. Then there is the whole problem of kids emulating the parents, so if the parents don't eat healthy the kids won't. These half measures are only meant to give you the feeling that someone is doing something, trust me, they're not.

it's a viscous cycle that is hard to stop once it's started. I would have to say 90% of the people that I know that work in healthcare have horrible diets and don't exercise.

100% agree with people in healthcare.

1. Milk - no
2. Cereal - no
3. Bottled water - no
4. Soft drinks - yes (diet, soon to quit)
5. Bread - sometimes

I used to eat cereal all the time, but haven't for a long time. Over the last several years I've taken to eating foods that I make from scratch. Grand, not all of it is health food -- such as Hong Kong French toast -- but it's a shit-ton healthier than any produced food in the stores.

With all do respect the congress commisioned iwg can go fuck themselves perhaps if they could fix their spending problem then this might be something they wouldn't have to worry about. And if its that much if an issue then can't Obama just print more money like how he did in the early days of his 1st term thus degrading the dollar even more? Or better yet he could cut military funding in half for the 4th time to fix another issue

i looked up the hong kong toast.... a whole stick of butter:thinking:

the worst butter loaded tasty things i make are fettucini alfredo for my son.... and the occasional pineapple upside down cake. both are like drinking a cup of butter. i'm living off coffee, the occasional ice cold beer, and raw fruits n veggies right now. fat and summer heat are one of the worst mixes ever.

Yep, a lot of butter. But it's worth it. You start by cutting the crusts off the slices of bread. The crust changes the flavor if you leave it on. Then whip one large egg for each two slices of bread, though it doesn't scale well. For each two additional slices, you'll need to add another egg. Dredge the bread in the eggs. Toss a copious amount of butter on a griddle set around 325. Cook the first side until brown. Then toss down some more butter and cook the other side until it's a bit black. Cooking the second side longer results in the sugars in the bread caramelizing, which makes the toast a bit crunchy (good texture) and sweet all on its own. I top it with honey, but feel free to use syrup.

I don't know about you, but if I don't cheat regularly, I tend to binge. So yeah, eat something "bad" from time to time. Hell, it's still better for you than any produced food you'll get at the store.

the reason why manurer is so fertile is not because its shit its because of also what is processed in the manurer. Human shit would only cause allot of health issues, where horse, cow, and other grass feed animals, most of the waste is water and plant. It still holds allot of nutrient value, it is basically a natural compost. We would probably start another black plague if we used human shit.

1. Milk - no
2. Cereal - yes (Ezekiel cereal is good, or fruity pebbles pre workout is GREAT!!)
3. Bottled water - All ways have cold bottles on standby
4. Soft drinks - VERY rarely, only if its a root beer float
5. Bread - Ezekiel Bread daily.

not a spending problem it's a revenue problem. the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 reduced revenues to all time lows then they were further reduced by the effects of the economic downturn in 2008. this is economics 101

Butter isn't something you should be concerned about, the bread and syrup are, though. Did you guys know you can make pancakes with 2 eggs, a ripe banana, and nutmeg and vanilla? That's great for you and pretty tasty. Just whip up the ingredients and use it like pancake batter. That's my friday go-to breakfast with a bunch of parsnips, potatoes, and other veggies on the side.

never heard of pancake from banana but cocoa powder and frozen banana make a very nice ice cream substitute.

I lightly toast my multi grain bread using the low setting on the toaster and then use all egg whites and one whole egg and just enough unsalted butter to crisp it up. French Toast was originally meant to make stale bread edible and pre-toasting it makes it a bit firmer so it doesn't get too soggy. Most people like it mushy on the inside, but I don't. Multi-grain bread makes good french toast.

I also pre-toast a little darker for grilled cheese when I get the hankering. I melt the butter and lightly brush it on the bread, not coated but enough to crisp up the very top layer, I use smoked cheddar. That with a bowl of home-made chicken & wildrice soup is the best rainy afternoon lunch.

If I'm planning to eat French toast the next morning, I put the bread out overnight to go a bit stale. I'm like you in that I can't stand mushy French toast. If I'm using Texas toast, after frying it, I'll put it in the oven at 300 for 5 minutes. If I'm feeling really uppity, I'll cut it diagonal, slice open the center, and put a little cream cheese and strawberries.
