Interesting opinion piece on why Healthcare can't ever be a free market

It's never been and never will be free. People just want someone else to pay for their healthcare. We don't have insurance now, we have prepaid health care.

Free market is not the same thing as cost free unless I'm missing what you're getting at?

Health Care in the US is not a free market; it has always been a bit different than a true free market because it can make the difference between life and death. Enter the government to "fix" it, but instead of fixing it or improving it; it does what government always does; screw it up worse and turn it into a political football with each partisan side trying to use it to their advantage. It is such a mess now because of government meddling where it has no business being involved. If we had true health insurance instead of a prepaid medical plan; market forces would drive the costs down. It all we did was let the market govern, no doubt the costs would plummet and the quality of services would improve; that's what competition does. However, this leaves out the problem of those who cannot afford health care and they would be left to suffer or die for lack of financial means. I don't think anyone wants that; so the problem is; how to provide for those without screwing up the market forces that would drive down costs and improve quality of care. There is only one way; put the consumer in charge; no middle man, no government in between. For those who cannot afford to pay their own way government can provide vouchers that these people can use to shop for and get the care they want.

The main thing is to get government out of the market and from between the consumer and the provider.

Health Insurance is a mess. It seems everyone is working in opposite directions on this repeal.

Tho I believe the ACA law to be the biggest shill job on the American people, whatever the replacement is, I hope they at least keep the 10 Essentials of the ACA plans. These benefits IMO make for a nice foundation, with which to build out the new health insurance plans that will inevitably replace ACA.

And everyone should be insurable.. Otherwise, America will not be that great, again.

And undo the law that went into effect, prior to ACA, where nincompoop in chief Obama capped commissions paid to health insurance agents. He took down an entire industry, putting people out business in an instant. What we would make selling one health insurance policy, we now have to sell more 5x the ACA policies to make that same. I sold a health insurance policy back in 2009 for $450 month, got paid $450+. I sold a policy in 2014 for $1100/mo. Got paid less than $250.

That's why health insurance agents nowadays are always trying to sell you on supplemental benefits like Accident or Cancer or Critical Illness, and/or Life insurance... on top of your Health policy. It's the only way they make money they can live on.. And now you can only sell health insurance for 3 months a year.. with a few exceptions.

Health Care in the US is not a free market; it has always been a bit different than a true free market because it can make the difference..... The main thing is to get government out of the market and from between the consumer and the provider.

here's a blurb from a nytimes article regarding the CBO's report on the new healthcare bill

But the analysis does show that under the Republican plan there would be winners ? and losers. Under current law, in 2026, a single 21-year-old earning $26,500 with an insurance policy that costs $5,100 a year would get a tax credit of $3,400 and would have to pay $1,700 of the premium. Under the Republican bill, that person?s share of the cost would drop to $1,450.
By contrast, a 64-year-old earning the same amount would fare much worse. That person?s $15,300 health plan would be offset by a $13,600 tax credit under current law, leaving the consumer responsible for $1,700. Under the Republican plan, health insurers would be free to charge older people more, raising that person?s premium to $19,500. But the tax credit would be only $4,900, and that person?s share of the premium would then be $14,600.

... all true !! the new 'trumpdon'tcare' health care bill gives 'tax rebates' to the 'Mega Rich', the top 200 Americans that make over 300 million dollars a year will get a massive tax cut... sure !! the richest people in the US will be even more rich... SAD ...and now trumps people are starting their campaign to put all the guilt and blame of this failed policy on Rep. Ryan.... a standard trump move, blame everybody but yourself... SAD !!!

...on the street I'm starting to hear trump voters regretting ever voting for him[buyer remorse]...

I literally haven't heard one in person say it.
What I have noticed is pro-policy people being notably silent on social media (actual friends) ..except for one heavily Christian acquaintance get in to an almost fever pitch in his pro Christian conservative statements....that he doesn't seem to recognize as such

... with my one Catholic trumper friends, it was more about how callous & cold trump is about pulling Catholic immigrant families apart by deporting mothers of children born here without any concern for the families... I am not religious, although baptized and raised Catholic...but to separate families is kinda of nasty, not that trump cares..

Definitely a great read.. And I think more people are tuning in and taking action than ever before..

I've always been independent of political party, until this election. This is the first time I've voted straight ticket, ever.. And it wasn't because Trump or the Republican Party won me over, but more because I felt pushed away, and disconnected, from the Democrat Party. Once Bernie Sanders became a nominee for the party, that was the icing on the cake. The Dems nominated a self proclaimed socialist for POTUS..!! WTF..

Sure, it's clear, both parties have lost their way, but to me, this was the ultimate "fuck you" to the American people.

Trump represented the ultimate "fuck you" back.. and the opposite of Socialism..

I recently heard a quirky, yet famous, talk show host say, "a socialist, is a communist without a gun". Socialism always collapses into communism, with only one exception.. Libya, and Moammar Gadhafi.
