O.K. here we go... I am in my 6th week of training and still very minimal results. Here is an average day:
5:00am Wake drink 8oz. water head to gym
5:30+- Start work out
6:20 Head home
6:30 Eat Omelette (3egg whites 3 thin slices lean ham on Whole Wheal Toast)
9:30 Eat Chicken Breast
12:30 Eat Chicken Breast with a carb (rice, bread or pasta)
3:00 Nutritional Bar
7:00 Eat Sensible dinner (chicken or lean beef, fat free beans, pasta, various carbs)

My workout routine:
Monday: Chest: Shoulders: Triceps: Biceps: Back
Tuesday: cardio 20 min
Wednesday: lower body: abs
Wed: Off
Thurs (same as Monday)
Friday: Same as Wednesday

weight 210 height 6'
I don't currently take any supplements. Am I still expecting results too early or am I doing something wrong?
Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Just some suggestions:
*You aren't ingesting any food before you work out.The last time you ate was 7 pm the previous evening. It has been 10 1/2 hours since you've eaten anything.Time between yesterday's last meal and today's first meal is almost 12 hours. That is a long time to go without food.
What is your training goal?Size, strength, fat loss?List your entire routine. As for nutrition, I would say to include one more meal after dinner and add a pre-workout meal, even something like a cup of yogurt would be beneficial. Also, your post-workout meal only has about 25g of protein and not many carbs at all.For someone your size, you might want to increase calories for this meal.I'd be willing to bet that most of your failure to make gains is a result of your diet.

I don't remember your goals, but it looks like a bit of overtraining.

You are working your entire upper body every 4 days, and your legs every third day. Why don't you break up the upper body work-out into two separate days, and add at least one more rest day.
You really don't want to work a muscle more than once ever 5-6 days if you want it to grow, especially legs.

Your calories look a bit low for your weight...is that intentional?

I agree with Prince. I think you overtraining.

If your goal is fat loss, 20 minutes of cardio a week isn't enough. 3-4 days of 30-45 minutes would be better. Not sure of your goals though.

I actually was thinking I wasn't working out enough. I figured my cardio wasn't enough simply becouse I generally only do it 1 to 2 days a week. As for nutrition, This seems to be where I struggle the most. And it is not because I can't control my desires to eat certain food. It's simply that I am having a hard time understanding what I need to eat. Sure protien and a carb for each meal. This is very hard to do... Also sugar intake caloric intake saturated fat vs. everything, WOW how do you guys do it? There is definately a new profound respect to body builders. This stuff is a science I am having a hard time mastering. I for the most part have no problem with setting goals and working hard to meet them. But building the perfect body has been by far my biggest life challange. Any and all comments and critiques are appreciated. Later......

*** I would stick to the 10 1/2 hour fasting period. It will be very effective towards your goal of fat loss.

Bollox to that my friend.
He'll see great results.

I understand your phisiology text says differently but sometimes real world experience overules.

I understand what you are saying Maki, and I agree that it is one way of losing weight. However, there are better ways to lose weight other than practically starving yourself. That's 12 hours in between meals! You are going half a day without food, and then trying to play catch up for the other half.I believe manipulating the diet is one of the best ways for fat loss, but, the meals should be a little closer together.

BTW, Junebug-gluconeogenesis is the production of glucose from non-carb sources like fats or proteins. Not necessarily a good thing if you are looking to build muscle.

Pffft...

Muscles use a substance called ATP to contract. If we work out on an empty stomach, especially during weight training, our bodies will break down our muscle tissue for energy (ATP) - this is a form of gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis is just the process of breaking down protein into glucose to use for energy. Breaking down fat into glucose is another gluco-something or other...but I forget the term.

Ballast is 100% correct, Maki is, well, an Angry Drunken Asian.

If my explanation behind my reasoning doesn't make sense, then perhaps an example would help a little.Last year I trained a baseball player who wanted to gain some lean muscle mass while keeping his bodyfat to a minimum. He had been following a diet similar to Junebug's.His last meal of the day was a protein shake at around 9 pm.4-5 mornings out of the week, he would wake up(and without eating),and he would perform either a resistance training session or an aerobic conditioning session.Afterward, he would eat his breakfast. When we started, the first thing I had him do was increase his meal frequency from 5 meals to 7.This included adding a pre-workout meal of oatmeal and skim milk.Within 3 weeks he had lost 4 pounds and according to regular body composition tests, it was primarily fat.It is my understanding that the body considers digestion as work and this fact alone indicates that if you eat small frequent meals(primarily high protein, low fat,low-mod carb)throughout the day(along with following a sensible training plan), you should lose fat without starving yourself.I'm not trying to argue with you Maki, I'm just trying to give Junebug some insight.

I don't disagree with the notion of feeding himslef more often, but what I was pointing out is that the fasting period can last upwards of 16 hours with great results.

I have used this on several clients who have wanted to lose some BF. I monitor all my clients very closely and I never saw a decrease in muscle mass.

I would suggest like Ballast said to increase your feeding to 7-8 meals a day. That would be every 2 hours from 6 in the morning to 6 at night.

Bollox.

Sure, it "works" in that you will lose bodyfat...but it ain't the best way to go about doing things.

Individual experience is just that, individual. If you're going to base what you do on experience then collective experience is what you base it on.

Do watcha want you little peckerhead, it isn't effecting me none.

For myself, I workout at 5:00 AM with an empty stomach, I may eat a banana, tops. Works for me.
I am lost though, is Jugheads goal fat lose or building muscle? The single best thing I did to help me build muscle was to stop doing cardio, period and using my diet to eliminate body fat. I try and eat 6 small meals during the day including a shake before bed.

Actually my goal is to loose weight and build muscle. In the past 6 weeks I have lost roughly 5 lbs. My goal is to get down to 185 and to build a nice physique. Did anyone see American History X? Remember Edward Norton, I wan't to look similar to that.

Junebug, some may say that you can't build muscle and lose fat at the same time. I believe you can as I have BUT, it takes a long time to do. You will see faster results for example if your main goal is simply to lose fat, simple run you a$$ off, diet, and lift to tone,(high reps)
But to do both at the same time is hard and takes alot of time. Lift for size,(heavy weights, low reps)get plenty of rest, and most important, eat clean and often. No junk food and eat 6 small meals per day.
Slowly but surely you will start seeing your fat being replaced by muscle. Your weight won't change all that much but when you look in the mirror you are going to see changes.
Good Luck

hey junebug 5 lbs in 6 weeks isnt that bad. I think you should only aim for 1 lb a week, that way you will lose hardly any strength, if any..because if your losing like 3-5 lbs a week then it'll be muscle and fat that your losing.

bharminder, You said just what I needed to hear. Hearing that is very motivational. Thanks
