A pretty good article from Thib on the rate at which you can gain muscle. He basically espouses doing lean bulks instead of cycling large bulking/cutting phases. This is the approach that I have adopted lately because it just doesn't make sense to outpace your body's level of protein synthesis like that. Not to mention that cutting sucks the big one.

Damn it. That article just made me rethink my current goals and training strategy.
I have some thinking to do.

I've been doing lean bulking for the past few months. :dancer:

great read thanks cp

Great article, made me rethink my bulking routine. Although by looking at that table at the bottom im ingesting pretty much the right amount of clean calories for optimal growth.

Good read, love the part where he talks about newbes gaining 20lbs in 3 months and thinking it's muscle.

Yeah that always pisses me off. Somebody's braggin about how much "muscle" they gained and you're like "u juicin?" ....."hell no"...."then it's not all muscle"....."course it is"....."that's not possible"..."well I did it"....:suicide:

I hate this article...it hurts...I have a pretty decent metabolism...so I start trying to gain weight...eating like mad it still comes relatively slow...pound here...two pounds last week...boom, I'm fat. SHIT.

"However, the average trainee wants to look good all year long. What if you meet a girl while you're bulked up? 'Not with the lights on, honey. I'm bulking.'"

My take of the article was a person can only gain about 4-6lbs LBM every 3 months or so.....The fact is that is only for beginners. After the first year most of us are lucky to gain 8-10lbs a year naturally LBM.

Yeah, that got me laughing aswell :P.

Good article. Good job too, im actually starting to get a little fat at the moment. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Ever wonder what all these great, advanced training regimens are for?? Are they to keep us growing....like...period?? Or do you think they increase our LBM gains from .5lbs a month to .6lbs??

Cool article, thanks for sharing. I like the construction analogy.

maintenance bulking?

Just my way of thinking with respect to slow bulking. Just above maintenance, somewhat cycled in cals. More or less.

Similar logic to what Emma has suggested in the past in the Diet forum. Look up her posts, she has some zingers in there on the best approach.

Yeah that was a great article - thanks for posting it - I've always tried to stay lean but sometimes its so tempting when you know you are strong but you still think you look 'small' compared to people who dont even train! This has re-enthused me to keep going with small gains.

I see that my goal for gaining 10-15 lbs. of muscle - bodyweight over the next 12 months is about on target!

Well-written article... and easy to understand by newbies like myself.

:thumb: best article i read lately .... thnx cp , that's what i always thought about ,eating around maintanance all the time ,instead of bulking /cutting and looking like crap all the year.. ... so people must not eat more than (maintanance + 300-500 cals) per day. am i right?

I usually make increases and decreases in caloric intake in 5% increments. It has worked well for me thus far.

that's just 200 for every 4000 cals .... so do you gain lbm while doing this?? and if you do , is it accompanied by fat gain?? i think that's less than 3/2 lb monthly...

I've been gaining .4 pounds a week for the past few weeks. There is probably some fat with it, but I'm still pretty lean.

why's this for foreman anyway?
