I made this for MBC yesterday. A damn good dish!
You'll need:
2 1/2 cups cavatelli (wagon wheel pasta)
12 ounces turkey sausage
14 1/2 oz can tomato sauce
16 oz jar mushroom spaghetti sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella
2 cloves chopped garlic
3/4 cup chopped onion
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp black pepper
Cook cavatelli until tender but firm.
In large pan, cut turkey sausage into 1/2 inch cubes. Cook turkey sausage, garlic, and onion until turkey sausage is no longer pink. Drain fat.
In large mixing bowl, combine spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, black pepper, and 1/2 cup of the cheese. Add the cooked pasta and sausage mixture to the bowl. Gently stir until mixed.
Preheat oven to 375. Bake, covered, in a 2 quart casserole dish for 25 -30 minutes. Remove cover and pour remaining 1/2 cup of cheese on top of pasta mixture. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, until cheese is melted and cooked.
My notes:
-I use Italian style tomato sauce for the extra spices (Hunt's works well).
-I use Mushroom and Black Olive spaghetti sauce by Classico. It only comes in a 26 oz jar, so I use just over half the jar.
-I use Hot 'n Spicy turkey sausage by The Turkey Store (remove castings before cooking). 12 oz is approx three links.
-Goes great with garlic bread.
I make such a good wife.
